al-Fatawa al-Yawmiyya min al-Masail al-Fiqhiyya (Daily Legal Rulings on Jurisprudential Issues) is a contemporary compendium of legal rulings compiled by Ahmad ibn Salih ibn Umar ibn Murshid in Riyadh (completed in 1443 AH / 2022 CE), focusing on the jurisprudence of acts of worship (fiqh al-ibadat).

Purpose and Intended Use

The compiler authored the work to address the practical need of making essential religious knowledge accessible and easily understood by ordinary Muslims. Completed in Riyadh on 3 Sha'ban 1443 AH (6 March 2022 CE), the book was specifically formatted for mosque imams to read aloud to their congregations on a daily basis. The compiler recommended that imams read one page, half a page, or a single extended ruling per day at a measured and deliberate pace, repeating passages when necessary to ensure listeners comprehend the rulings.

Sources and Methodology

The work draws exclusively from the first edition (published in 1417 AH) of the official rulings issued by the Saudi Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta (al-Lajna al-Da'ima li-l-Buhuth al-Ilmiyya wa-l-Ifta). In compiling the book, Ibn Murshid applied specific editorial principles:

  • Exclusion of queries: In most instances, only the issued ruling (the response) was transcribed, omitting the original questions.
  • Selection of comprehensive answers: Where multiple questions addressed the same legal subject, he selected the single most detailed and comprehensive response.
  • Simplification: He occasionally restricted entries to essential legal information needed by laypersons while leaving out non-essential technicalities.
  • Sequential numbering and referencing: Every ruling is assigned a sequential number and concludes with an exact volume and page citation from the original 1417 AH edition of the Committee's collection.

Structure and Scope

The compendium comprises a total of 843 numbered fatwas arranged by thematic areas within the jurisprudence of ritual worship (al-ibadat):

  • Purification (al-taharah)
  • Prayer (al-salah)
  • Zakat (al-zakah)
  • Fasting (al-siyam)
  • Pilgrimage (al-hajj)
  • Sacrificial offerings, Eid livestock sacrifice, newborn sacrifice, and the naming of newborns (al-hady wa-l-udhiyyah wa-l-aqiqah wa-tasmiyat al-mawlud)
