al-Faraid al-Hisan fi Add Ay al-Quran (lit. 'The Beautiful Unique Gems on Counting the Verses of the Quran') is a didactic poem on the science of Quranic verse breaks (ilm al-fawasil) by the Egyptian scholar of Quranic readings Abd al-Fattah al-Qadi (d. 1403 AH / 1983 CE) .

Subject and Structure

The work is a poetic versification (nazm) dedicated to documenting the differences among the recognized authorities of verse numbering ('ulama' al-'adad) regarding where verses begin and end, based on authoritative and relied-upon positions (al-mu'tamad) . The author explained the title as an analogy comparing the structured arrangement and high value of the lines to precious and beautiful gems (al-fara'id al-hisan) .

After an introductory opening in verse, the text is structured sequentially according to the chapters (surahs) of the Quran—beginning with Surah al-Fatihah, followed by Surah al-Baqarah, Surah Al Imran, and continuing through the remainder of the Quranic text . Under each chapter, the verses outline the specific points of disagreement between the regional counting traditions—such as the Kufan, Basran, Makkan, the two Madinan, Damascene, and Hims traditions—over whether specific Quranic phrases are counted as distinct verses or omitted from the count .
