al-Durra fi al-Hajj wa al-Umra (The Pearl Concerning the Rites of Hajj and Umrah) is a legal and practical guide to the major and minor Islamic pilgrimages authored by the contemporary Yemeni scholar Abu Abd al-Rahman Yahya ibn Ali al-Hajuri.

Background and Composition

The work originated as an extract from al-Hajuri's broader commentary on al-Muntaqa by Ibn al-Jarud. The author decided to separate and publish the pilgrimage section as an independent treatise following requests from students and peers for a concise, accessible manual on the subject. Al-Hajuri had previously authored other treatises addressing pilgrimage jurisprudence, including Tanwir al-Hawalik fi Ahkam al-Manasik (Illuminating the Obscurities in the Rulings of Rites) and Ithaf al-Kiram bi-Ajwibat Ahkam al-Zakat wa al-Hajj wa al-Siyam (Gifting the Noble with Answers on Zakat, Hajj, and Fasting). The author completed the introduction to the work on 25 Shawwal 1445 AH (May 2024 CE).

Structure and Contents

The book provides legal rulings and practical instructions for pilgrims, organized systematically into several preliminary and main sections:

  • Preliminary Etiquettes and Prerequisites: The opening chapter examines the essential inner preparations incumbent upon every pilgrim before entering into the pilgrimage state, emphasizing the purification of intention, absolute sincerity (ikhlas), the avoidance of ostentation (riya'), and repentance (tawba).
  • Virtues of the Sacred Precincts: A dedicated overview detailing the sanctity, status, and specific regulations associated with the Sacred House of Allah (al-Masjid al-Haram and the Ka'bah).
  • Rites of Hajj and Umrah: The core jurisprudence governing the performance of the pilgrimage, covering the ritual entry into consecrated state (ihram), designated spatial boundaries (mawaqit), circumambulation (tawaf), the sa'y between Safa and Marwah, and the stations and rituals of the days of pilgrimage.
