al-Durar al-Muntaqah min al-Kalimat al-Mulqah (The Selected Pearls from the Delivered Words) is a multi-volume collection of daily Islamic lessons compiled by the contemporary Saudi preacher and scholar Dr. Amin ibn Abd Allah al-Shaqawi . Prepared primarily for mosque imams, preachers, and educators to read aloud to congregants after daily prayers, the work addresses foundational and practical topics across various branches of Islamic knowledge .
Background and Composition
The book originated from al-Shaqawi's assignment by the Department of Da'wah and Guidance at the Riyadh branch of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da'wah, and Guidance to deliver admonitory speeches across mosques in Riyadh . Several mosque imams suggested that he transcribe and publish these delivered talks so that imams, students of knowledge, and the general public could make structured use of them .
The compilation expanded through several successive editions:
- The first edition was published in 1422 AH (c. 2001 CE), consisting of thirty lessons in a single part .
- The second edition appeared in 1423 AH (c. 2002 CE), combining Parts 1 and 2 with an additional forty lessons, reaching a total of seventy .
- The third edition, published in 1426 AH (c. 2005 CE), added eighty lessons to form Parts 1 through 3 in a single volume containing 150 lessons .
Al-Shaqawi subsequently continued the project over approximately eight years, expanding it into an encyclopedic series titled Mawsu'at al-Durar al-Muntaqah min al-Kalimat al-Mulqah . By Volume 4 (incorporating Part 8) in 1435 AH (2014 CE), the series comprised 400 lessons . Subsequent installments continued to be prepared, including Part 9 with fifty lessons, Parts 11 and 12 with seventy lessons each, with the twelfth part finalized in Jumada al-Akhirah 1442 AH (January 2021 CE) . The author noted assistance in review and preparation from scholars including his teacher Hamad ibn Abd Allah al-Jum'ah and Ghalib al-Mutayri .
Contents and Methodology
The work covers diverse subjects, including Islamic creed (ʿaqidah), Quranic exegesis (tafsir), Hadith, jurisprudence (fiqh), virtue, heart-softeners (raqa'iq), supplications and remembrances (adhkar), dietary etiquette, prohibitions, family ethics, women's issues, and contemporary social concerns .
In compiling the lessons, the author adhered to several methodological principles:
- Authenticity of Hadith: Committing to cite only authentic (sahih) narrations while avoiding fabricated (mawdu') and weak (da'if) reports as much as possible, alongside providing references to source collections .
- Vocalization (tashkil): Adding vowel markings to the prophetic traditions and selected difficult terms to assist readers in accurate oral recitation .
- Source Reliance: Drawing upon foundational works of exegesis, jurisprudence, hadith, history, and biography, as well as the documented sayings of the Companions, the Successors, and established scholars .
Reception
The work received commendatory forewords and endorsements from several Saudi scholars, including Sheikh Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Rajhi, who praised its breadth and grounded citations from classical texts and recommended it for daily congregational reading . Sheikh Nasir ibn Sulayman al-Umar commended its accessibility and avoidance of weak traditions , and written introductions were also provided by Sa'd ibn Abd Allah al-Humayyid and Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman Al Sa'd .
