al-Durar al-Bahiya wa al-Rawda al-Nadiya wa al-Taliqat al-Radiya (The Splendid Pearls, the Dewy Garden, and the Pleasing Marginalia) is a multi-tiered Arabic legal compilation comprising a foundational jurisprudence manual by Muhammad ibn Ali al-Shawkani (d. 1250 AH / 1834 CE), its commentary by Siddiq Hasan Khan (1248–1307 AH / 1832–1890 CE), and critical marginalia by Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) .

Component Texts and Authorship

The composite work brings together three interconnected layers of Islamic legal scholarship:

  • al-Durar al-Bahiya fi al-Masa'il al-Fiqhiyya: A concise legal primer (matn) penned by al-Shawkani, designed to summarize the core topics of Islamic jurisprudence across all conventional chapters of legal manuals based on verified proofs rather than strict adherence to a particular school of law (taqlid) .
  • al-Rawda al-Nadiya Sharh al-Durar al-Bahiya: An extensive commentary by the Indian scholar Siddiq Hasan Khan . It explicates the primer by citing textual evidence directly from the Quran and the Sunnah according to the methodology of the traditionists (ashab al-hadith), closely following al-Shawkani's own commentary, al-Darari al-Mudiyya, with selected additions and discussions .
  • al-Ta'liqat al-Radiyya 'ala al-Rawda al-Nadiya: A body of approximately one thousand annotations authored by al-Albani over more than forty years of teaching and reviewing Siddiq Hasan Khan's text . Al-Albani recorded finishing his reading of the book on the eve of Saturday, 29 Sha'ban 1379 AH, except for the chapter on bequests (Kitab al-Wasiyya) .

Contents and Methodology

The work covers the complete range of Islamic jurisprudence, beginning with ritual purity (al-Taharah) and proceeding through prayer, financial transactions, family law, and other legal branches .

Al-Albani's marginalia address several aspects of the text:

  • Evaluating and grading the authenticity of hadiths cited in the commentary .
  • Clarifying rare or archaic vocabulary (sharh al-gharib) .
  • Assessing and qualifying legal rulings where al-Albani's independent legal reasoning (ijtihad) differed from that of Siddiq Hasan Khan .
  • Incorporating and commenting on earlier marginal notes left by the Egyptian scholar Ahmad Muhammad Shakir (d. 1377 AH / 1958 CE), who had previously proofread and annotated al-Rawda al-Nadiya for the al-Muniriyya edition .

Publication and Reception

The composite edition combining all three layers was verified and prepared for publication by Ali ibn Hasan al-Halabi al-Athari and published in three volumes in 1423 AH / 2003 CE jointly by Dar Ibn al-Qayyim in Riyadh and Dar Ibn 'Affan in Cairo . In this edition, Shakir's notes are marked with the letter shin (ش), al-Albani's notes are marked with a dedicated symbol and the letter nun (ن), while the editor's footnotes remain unmarked .

While the edition was received as an important contribution to evidence-based legal literature, bibliographer Abdullah al-Shamrani noted that because al-Albani's annotations were brief relative to the size of the whole commentary, they could have been printed as a standalone monograph referencing existing editions of al-Rawda al-Nadiya—such as that of Muhammad Subhi Hallaq—rather than requiring students of knowledge to repurchase the full text .
