al-Dua (Kitab al-Dua, "The Book of Supplication") is an early hadith collection devoted to prophetic prayers and invocations, compiled by the Kufan hadith scholar Abu Abd al-Rahman Muhammad ibn Fudayl al-Dabbi (d. 195 AH / 811 CE) .

Content and Transmission

The work collects narrated traditions (hadiths) and reports transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ, the Companions, and early figures concerning various supplications and remembrances . Its contents cover prayers for situations such as hunger and distress, supplications uttered during ritual ablution (wudu), invocations for fellow Muslims in their absence, and formulas for seeking divine refuge and protection .

The book was preserved through transmission from Muhammad ibn Fudayl by Ali ibn al-Mundhir al-Kufi . From him, it passed through Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Riyah al-Ashja'i, al-Qadi Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Husayn al-Ju'fi, and Abu al-Faraj Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Allan (known as Ibn al-Khazin) . A surviving reading of the text took place before the grammarian al-Sharif Abu al-Barakat Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Kufi at the mosque of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i in Kufa in Dhu al-Qi'da 521 AH . Later scholars recorded transmission chains back to the author, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his bibliographical catalog al-Mujam al-Mufahras and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti in Inshab al-Kuthub .

Publication

The work was edited by Dr. Abd al-Aziz ibn Sulayman al-Bu'aymi and published in a single volume by Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh (1st edition, 1419 AH / 1999 CE) .
