al-Dhurriya al-Tahira (The Pure Progeny; also titled al-Dhurrīyah al-Ṭāhirah al-Muṭahharah) is a hadith and biographical monograph by the traditionist and historian Abu Bishr al-Dawlabi (d. 310 AH / 923 CE; another report gives 320 AH / 932 CE), devoted to documenting the offspring and household of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Scope and Method

The work compiles transmitted narrations and historical reports, recorded with full chains of narration (asānīd), detailing the lineage, marriages, and lives of the Prophet's ﷺ daughters—Zaynab bint Muhammad, Ruqayyah bint Muhammad, Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad, and Fatima—as well as his sons. It places particular focus on Fatima's marriage to Ali ibn Abi Talib and the births, virtues, and circumstances of their children, notably al-Hasan ibn Ali and al-Husayn ibn Ali. The text also incorporates specific narrations transmitted on Fatima's authority.

Later traditionists and historians—including Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani—frequently cited and evaluated chains of transmission directly from al-Dawlabi's work when discussing the Prophet's descendants and related events, such as the funeral preparations of his daughters.

Transmission and Manuscripts

The book was transmitted through the Egyptian traditionist Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Rashiq from al-Dawlabi. Transmission certificates record its reading in Baghdad in 629 AH, where it was read by scholars including the hadith specialist Ibn Nuqta at the Mustansiriyya Mosque along the Tigris, and by Sharaf al-Din Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn al-Akhdar.

Manuscript copies of the work have survived in several collections, including a copy dated 855 AH held at the Köprülü Library (MS 428/2), as well as copies preserved in the collection of Al-Zaytuna Mosque (MS 3746/2) and the personal collection of Hasan Husni Abd al-Wahhab in Tunis.
