al-Dhikr wa al-Dua wa al-Ilaj bi al-Ruqya min al-Kitab wa al-Sunna (Remembrance, Supplication, and Healing through Incantation from the Book and the Sunna) is a comprehensive manual of Islamic devotions and spiritual remedies by Saeed bin Wahf al-Qahtani (d. 1440 AH / 2018 CE) .
Composition and Purpose
Al-Qahtani began compiling the work in Sha'ban 1405 AH and completed it around Rabi' al-Awwal 1406 AH . Motivated by classical compilations of remembrance—most notably al-Adhkar by al-Nawawi—he sought to assemble authentic (sahih) and good (hasan) narrations traced directly to primary hadith sources, organizing them into a practical reference for daily use .
Structure and Content
The book covers three interrelated subjects:
- Remembrance (dhikr): Outlines the virtues of remembering God and attending gatherings of remembrance, followed by prescribed daily invocations spanning the day and night, including waking, morning and evening, and entering and leaving the home .
- Supplication (dua): Details the etiquette of supplication, times, states, and places where prayers are answered, the conditions of acceptance, and impediments to a response . It compiles Quranic prayers of prophets, messengers, and the righteous, alongside non-time-bound supplications of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
- Spiritual Healing (ruqya): Gathers lawful incantations derived from the Quran and Sunna for prevention and treatment of ailments such as sorcery (sihr), the evil eye (al-ayn), madness (al-junun), and general bodily sicknesses .
Methodology and Hadith Verification
In his initial compilation, al-Qahtani provided brief hadith documentation, drawing extensively upon the verifications of contemporary scholars such as Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, Abd al-Qadir al-Arna'ut, and Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut . For the third edition around 1416 AH, he commissioned Yasir ibn Fathi Abu Amr al-Misri to expand the documentation by cross-referencing all narrations against primary hadith compendia under his supervision, which was subsequently reviewed by Furayh ibn Salih al-Bahlal .
Publication History and Abridgments
The first edition was published by Maktabat al-Rushd in 1408 AH, followed by a second edition in 1410 AH . An expanded edition featuring detailed hadith documentation was published in four volumes, with volumes one and two dedicated to remembrance, volume three to supplication, and volume four to spiritual healing .
Al-Qahtani produced several standalone abridgments extracted from different sections of the work:
- al-Dua min al-Kitab wa al-Sunna (1408 AH), condensing the supplication section .
- Hisn al-Muslim (1409 AH), abridging the remembrance section into a portable handbook .
- al-Ilaj bi al-Ruqa min al-Kitab wa al-Sunna (1414 AH), abridging the section on spiritual healing .
- Shurut al-Dua wa Mawani al-Ijabah (1416 AH), extracting the conditions, etiquettes, and impediments of prayer .
