al-Budur al-Zahira fi al-Qiraat al-Ashr al-Mutawatira (The Radiant Full Moons on the Ten Recurrent Readings) is a manual on Qur'anic variants authored by the Egyptian scholar and reciter Abu Hafs al-Nashshar (d. 938 AH / 1531–1532 CE) . It compiles and systematically arranges the variant readings across the ten recurrent (mutawatir) recitation traditions of the Qur'an .
Composition and Context
The author composed the work following the compilation of his earlier book, al-Mukarrar fi ma Tawatura min al-Qiraat al-Sab‘ wa-Taharrar, which focused exclusively on the seven canonical recitations . Following requests from colleagues and students for an accessible guide that expanded the scope to all ten recurrent readings, al-Nashshar compiled this work to present each textual variant in its proper textual position, facilitating study and memorization for learners .
Structure and Method
The work is organized sequentially according to the standard order of the chapters (suras) and verses (ayat) of the Qur'an . Al-Nashshar presents the differences among the ten reciters directly at each verse, detailing phonetic variations, vocalic differences, and morphological choices among the recognized transmitting authorities .
Manuscripts and Publication
Manuscript copies of the treatise are preserved in several international libraries, including Princeton University Library, the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, al-Azhar Library in Cairo, the Library of the Grand Mosque of Mecca, and the Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library in Patna . The book has been edited with scholarly annotations by Ahmad Isa al-Ma‘sarawi, funded by the Qatari Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs .
