Author and Context

The author was Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn Nasr ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn Sahl ibn al-Sari Ibn al-Zaghuni al-Baghdadi . Born in Baghdad in Jumada al-Ula 455 AH (1063 CE), he took his nisba from the nearby village of Zaghun . He studied Hanbali jurisprudence under the jurist Ya'qub al-Barzibini and received hadith transmissions from prominent Baghdadi traditionalists, including Abu Ja'far ibn al-Muslima, 'Abd al-Samad ibn al-Ma'mun, and Ibn al-Naqqur .

Ibn al-Zaghuni served as an influential Hanbali master and preacher in Baghdad, holding regular teaching and disputation circles at Jami' al-Mansur on Fridays and Saturdays . Among his notable students were the historian and preacher Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi, the historian Ibn 'Asakir, and the hadith specialist Abu Tahir al-Silafi . Ibn al-Zaghuni produced numerous treatises across theology, legal theory, and jurisprudence, including al-Idah fi Usul al-Din ("Clarification on the Principles of Religion") and al-Mufradat ("The Unique Juristic Opinions") . He died in Baghdad in Muharram 527 AH (1132 CE)—with reports differing between the 16th and 17th of the month—and was buried in the cemetery of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal .
