Al-Bayan fi Madhhab al-Imam al-Shafi'i (The Clarification in the School of Imam al-Shafi'i) is an encyclopedic legal manual in Shafi'i jurisprudence by the Yemeni jurist Yahya ibn Abi al-Khayr al-Umrani (489–558 AH / 1096–1163 CE) . It serves as an extensive commentary and expansion upon Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi's foundational legal text al-Muhadhdhab .
Composition and Structure
Al-Umrani began writing al-Bayan in 528 AH and completed it in 533 AH in his town of Masna'at Sayr . It occupied six years of labor . The composition built directly upon an earlier supplemental work by the author titled al-Zawa'id, which he had written between 517 and 520 AH to gather additional legal branches absent from al-Muhadhdhab .
The work is organized according to the chapter outline and subject sequence of al-Muhadhdhab . Al-Umrani established a consistent textual convention throughout the book, using the heading "al-mas'ala" (the issue) to designate the original material of al-Muhadhdhab, and "al-far'" (the subsidiary case) to introduce additional legal points and derivative branches .
Method and Contents
Al-Bayan integrates the original content of al-Muhadhdhab with the supplementary rulings gathered in al-Zawa'id, treatises on circular inheritance calculations (al-dawr), and explanations of ambiguous or challenging passages in al-Shirazi's phrasing . It incorporates legal proofs, analogies, and the divergent rulings of opposing legal schools .
Biographers such as Ibn Samurah al-Ja'di and Baha' al-Din al-Janadi noted that al-Umrani brought together the legal verifications of the Iraqi transmission (tahqiq al-Baghdadiyyin) and the fine distinctions of the Khurasani school (tadqiq al-Khurasaniyyin) . However, al-Nawawi observed in al-Tanqih that al-Umrani predominantly relates the Iraqi tradition, though he synthesizes both approaches in certain areas . The text also includes rare transmissions gathered during his travels, such as disputations in Mecca with the sharif Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Uthmani on points of jurisprudence and theology .
Reception and Impact
Al-Bayan attained wide circulation and acclaim across Yemen and the broader Islamic world. When copies transcribed by the calligrapher 'Ilwan arrived in Baghdad, scholars remarked on the depth of Yemeni legal scholarship . The book served as a standard reference and an officially taught text in Yemeni institutions during the Rasulid and Tahirid eras .
Major later Shafi'i jurists cited and engaged with the work regularly. Al-Rafi'i drew on it frequently in al-Aziz, as did al-Nawawi in Rawdat al-Talibin . Taj al-Din al-Subki routinely cited al-Umrani's preferences and balanced them against other Shafi'i authorities in Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyyah al-Kubra . While acknowledging its authority and utility across regions, al-Yafi'i noted that it incorporates certain weak legal opinions (wujuh da'ifah), pointing to specific positions on prayer invalidation and the timings of sa'y during pilgrimage .
Manuscripts and Publication
Historically, the text was cataloged in ten to twelve volumes . Manuscript sets and portions are preserved in institutions including the Egyptian National Library (Dar al-Kutub), the Ahmet III Library in Istanbul, the Grand Mosque of Sanaa, the Great Mosque of Tarim, and the al-Muzaffar Mosque in Taiz .
The work has been edited by Qasim Muhammad al-Nuri and published by Dar al-Minhaj .
