al-Bahr al-Muhit al-Thajjaj fi Sharh Sahih al-Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj (The Surging Encircling Sea: Commentary on the Sahih of Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj) is an extensive forty-five-volume hadith commentary by the Ethiopian scholar Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Adam al-Ethiopi (d. 1442 AH / 2020 CE) on Sahih Muslim .

Composition and Scope

After writing a separate extensive commentary on the introductory section of Sahih Muslim titled Qurrat 'Ayn al-Muhtaj fi Sharh Muqaddimat Sahih al-Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj (completed in 1423 AH / 2002 CE), al-Ethiopi resolved to write a full commentary spanning the entire collection . He aimed to unpack its legal and linguistic nuances, address difficulties in chains of transmission (asānīd) and texts (mutūn), and draw upon earlier commentators .

Al-Ethiopi completed the first volume of the commentary on Friday, 7 Ramadan 1424 AH (31 October 2003 CE) in Mecca . He finalized the forty-fifth and concluding volume in the last third of the night on Thursday, 16 Dhu al-Hijjah 1433 AH (1 November 2012 CE), also in Mecca .

Methodology and Structure

In his introduction, the author outlines a structured, systematic methodology that he applies across each tradition and chapter :

  • Numbering: He provides dual numbering for each hadith: his own continuous numbering for all narrations in the work, followed by the system established by Muhammad Fu'ad 'Abd al-Baqi .
  • Headings and Texts: He records the overarching book titles established by Imam Muslim, while assigning appropriate chapter titles to individual sections . Each hadith is quoted in full with its chain and text .
  • Biographies of Narrators: Narrators in each chain are numbered and examined sequentially . If an individual appears for the first time, al-Ethiopi provides a comprehensive biographical profile citing critical assessments of reliability and weakness (al-jarḥ wa-al-taʿdīl); if previously discussed, he provides a summary along with the narrator's generation (ṭabaqah), status, death date, and a cross-reference to the earlier entry .
  • Isnad Analysis: He details the subtle transmission features (laṭāʾif al-isnād) present in the chains .
  • Textual and Linguistic Commentary: Under the heading Sharh al-Hadith, he clarifies obscure vocabulary (gharīb), grammar (iʿrāb), and morphology (ṣarf), incorporating the opinions of grammarians, linguists, and jurists .
  • Thematic Legal and Hadith Issues: Each narration is analyzed under numbered thematic issues (masāʾil), which address:
    1. Whether the narration is agreed upon (muttafaq ʿalayh) or reported exclusively by Muslim relative to Sahih al-Bukhari .
    2. Extensive cross-referencing (takhrīj) across the Six Books, major collections such as Musnad Ahmad, Musnad al-Bazzar, Musnad Abi Ya'la, and the extraction works (mustakhrajāt) of Abu 'Awana and Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani .
    3. Derivation of jurisprudential and spiritual benefits (fawāʾid), including how the narration matches the chapter context .
    4. Differences of scholarly opinion (ikhtilāf) regarding the legal rulings derived from the text .
  • Completing Muslim's Cross-References: Where Imam Muslim abbreviates an isnad or matn with phrases such as "similar to the hadith of so-and-so" (mithlu hadīth fulān or naḥwahu), al-Ethiopi quotes the referenced report in full with its complete chain and text from other hadith compilations .

Sources

In his biographical evaluations, al-Ethiopi relies heavily on the biographical works of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (including Taqrib al-Tahdhib, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, and al-Isabah), al-Mizzi's Tahdhib al-Kamal, al-Dhahabi's Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' and Mizan al-I'tidal, al-Bukhari's al-Tarikh al-Kabir, Ibn Abi Hatim's al-Jarh wa-al-Ta'dil, and Ibn Hibban's al-Thiqat .

For the commentary and legal discussions, he draws extensively upon earlier commentators on Sahih Muslim, particularly al-Qadi Iyad, Ibn al-Salah, al-Qurtubi, and al-Nawawi, as well as Ibn Hajar's commentary on al-Bukhari, Fath al-Bari .
