al-Awwal min Hadith Abi Ali ibn Shadhan (The First Part of the Hadith of Abu Ali ibn Shadhan) is a hadith compendium containing transmissions reported by the hadith scholar Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Shadhan (d. 425 AH / 1034 CE; another report gives 426 AH) from his teachers.

Compilation and Transmission

The material in this collection was selected by Abu al-Qasim al-Azaji from the broader corpus of Ibn Shadhan’s narrations.

The text was transmitted from Ibn Shadhan by Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Ismail al-Tikaki and Abu Ghalib al-Baqillani. Transmitting from both of them were al-Amir al-Ajal Abu Ja'far al-Haytham ibn Hilal ibn al-Haytham and Abu Muhammad al-Narsi, while Abu al-Husayn Abd al-Haqq ibn Abd al-Khaliq transmitted it specifically from Abu Ghalib al-Baqillani. The scholar Abu Tahir al-Silafi also transmitted the work through his teacher Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn Abd al-Salam al-Ansari, directly from Ibn Shadhan.

Content and Manuscripts

The work consists of prophetic hadiths and reports narrated by Ibn Shadhan with complete chains of transmission (isnad). Among the prominent teachers from whom Ibn Shadhan relates hadiths in this part are Uthman ibn Ahmad ibn al-Sammak, Abu Sahl Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad al-Qattan, Hamzah ibn Muhammad al-Dihqan al-Uqabi, Maymun ibn Ishaq, and Abdullah ibn Ismail ibn Barriyyah al-Hashimi, often transmitting from earlier figures such as Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar al-Utaridi, Abbas ibn Muhammad al-Duri, and Abd al-Karim ibn al-Haytham. The texts address diverse subjects, including ritual worship, fasts, virtues of the Prophet's companions, and moral ethics.

Manuscripts of this first part are preserved in the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus within the collections of the Umariyya Madrasah (including Majmu' 31 / general no. 3768, and Majmu' 63).
