al-Awwal min Fawaid Abi al-Husayn ibn Ghanaim (The First Part of the Hadith Benefits of Abu al-Husayn ibn Ghanaim) is a short hadith compilation (juz) assembled from the verified audition records of the Egyptian Maliki jurist and traditionist Abu al-Husayn 'Ali ibn Ghanaim ibn 'Umar al-Khiraqi (d. ca. 470 AH / 1077 CE) .
Title and Composition
The full title recorded on the manuscript is al-Juz' al-Awwal min al-Fawa'id al-Mukharrajah min Usul Sama'at Abi al-Husayn 'Ali ibn Ghanaim ibn 'Umar al-Maliki al-Khiraqi (The First Part of Benefits Extracted from the Audition Notebooks of Abu al-Husayn 'Ali ibn Ghanaim ibn 'Umar al-Maliki al-Khiraqi) . Ibn Ghanaim, whose full lineage is 'Ali ibn Ghanaim ibn 'Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Ansari al-Awsi al-Khiraqi al-Maliki, passed through Damascus in 465 AH on his journey eastward to Baghdad, where he transmitted hadiths . He dictated and read this compilation aloud to students at the Palace Mosque (Jami' al-Qasr) in Baghdad on a Friday before prayer in the month of Safar 469 AH (September–October 1076 CE) . The text has survived primarily through the transmission of the scholar Abu al-Barakat Yahya ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Hubaysh al-Fariqi .
Content and Method
The work consists of selected hadiths arranged with full chains of transmission (isnad), featuring elevated chains ('uluww) and remarks on text authenticity and narrator paths . Ibn Ghanaim noted instances where narrated traditions were also recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and documented critical observations by hadith authorities such as 'Ubayd Allah ibn Sa'id al-Sijistani and Hamzah ibn Muhammad al-Kinani .
Among the prominent chains documented in the text:
- Narrations through Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Nazif al-Farra' from Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Sindi (Abu al-Fawaris al-Sabuni), through Isma'il ibn Yahya al-Muzani and al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman, from Imam al-Shafi'i, from Imam Malik ibn Anas—a sequence highlighted by the author as an elevated chain of jurist transmitting from jurist .
- Transmissions through Silah ibn al-Mu'ammal al-Baghdadi from 'Abd Allah ibn Ibrahim ibn Ayyub ibn Masi .
- Transmissions from Judge Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Sakhr via Yusuf ibn Ya'qub, carrying the narration of 'Abd Allah ibn Muslim al-Qa'nabi from Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaj .
- Transmissions via 'Ali ibn 'Umar al-Harrani and Turab ibn 'Umar al-Katib from the hafiz Hamzah ibn Muhammad al-Hafiz, including the well-known "Hadith of the Card" (Hadith al-Bitaqah) traced back to Layth ibn Sa'd .
- Narrations through 'Ali ibn Rabi'ah al-Bazzar from al-Hasan ibn Rashiq .
