al-Awali li Abi al-Shaykh (Arabic: العوالي لأبي الشيخ, also known as Juz' fihi 'Awali Abi al-Shaykh) is a specialized hadith treatise by the Isfahan traditionist and scholar Abu al-Shaykh al-Asbahani (274–369 AH / 887–979 CE), collecting narrations transmitted with elevated chains of narration (asand 'aliyah) .
Background and Subject Matter
The work belongs to the traditional hadith subgenre known as al-'awali (plural of 'aliyah), in which compilers assembled narrations distinguished by high or elevated isnads—meaning chains characterized by a minimal number of intermediary transmitters between the author and the Prophet ﷺ (absolute 'uluww) or between the author and an early hadith authority (relative 'uluww) . Abu al-Shaykh was renowned among the traditionists of Isfahan for his extensive collection of narrations across various tiers, actively transcribing both elevated and lower transmission chains (al-'ali wa-al-nazil) and being described by biographers as an authority possessing lofty chains of transmission (rafi' al-isnad) .
Publication
The tract was edited with hadith documentation (takhrij) by Mas'ad Abd al-Hamid Muhammad al-Sa'dani and published alongside another monograph by the author, Dhikr al-Aqran, by Dar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyyah in Beirut in 1417 AH / 1996 CE .
