Kitab al-Awail (The Book of Firsts) is a specialized hadith work by the traditionist and judge Ibn Abi Asim (206–287 AH / 822–900 CE) documenting historical precedents, primordial creations, and religious and cultural firsts in Islamic history .
Subject and Scope
The work belongs to the awa'il genre of Islamic literature, which focuses on identifying the first person, place, or occurrence associated with specific events, rites, and historical milestones . Among the topics Ibn Abi Asim records are:
- Cosmology and Prophets: Narrations concerning the creation of the Pen as the first created entity instructed to record divine decrees , and reports that Prophet Ibrahim was the first to be circumcised and will be the first to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection .
- Pre-Islamic Arabia: Reports describing Amr ibn Luhayy as the first to alter the Abrahamic monotheistic tradition by introducing idol worship and setting animals free as dedications (sa'ibah) .
- Early Islamic History: The earliest conversions to Islam and the first to perform prayer alongside the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, citing narrations regarding Khadijah, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Abu Bakr .
- Rituals and Communal Practices: The first Friday congregational prayers (Jumu'ah), including the gathering led by Mus'ab ibn Umayr in Medina prior to the Hijra, and the first Friday prayer established outside Medina at Jawatha in Bahrain .
Method and Reception
Ibn Abi Asim compiles the material using the conventional method of traditional hadith scholars, transmitting narrations alongside their full chains of transmission (asand), including both prophetic hadiths (marfu') and companion reports (mawquf) .
Later scholars of biographical and hadith literature cited Ibn Abi Asim's al-Awail as an early reference in the genre, alongside contemporary and subsequent works compiled by scholars such as Ibn Abi Shaybah, al-Tabarani, and Abu Hilal al-Askari .
Manuscripts and Publication
A manuscript of the work, preserved in the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (no. 1088, Hadith 297/1), carries an auditory certificate (sama') dated 638 AH . The book has been published in modern printed editions, including an edition published in Beirut in 1407 AH / 1987 CE edited by Muhammad al-Sa'id ibn Basyuni Zaghlul .
