Kitab al-Athar (The Book of Traditions) is an early compilation of legal traditions and narrations recorded by the Hanafi jurist and chief judge Abu Yusuf al-Qadi (113–182 AH / 731–798 CE), primarily transmitting the reports and legal rulings of his teacher Abu Hanifa .

Scope and Content

The work gathers legal evidence (adillat al-fiqh) and transmitted traditions underpinning the jurisprudence of Abu Hanifa, with the vast majority of its contents narrated directly on his authority . Consequently, scholars frequently categorized it as a musnad of Abu Hanifa's narrations, while noting that Abu Yusuf also incorporated additional traditions from his own narrations in certain places . Alongside works such as Kitab al-Kharaj (Book of Land Taxation), Ikhtilaf Abi Hanifa wa-Ibn Abi Layla (Disagreement between Abu Hanifa and Ibn Abi Layla), and al-Radd 'ala Siyar al-Awza'i (Refutation of al-Awza'i's Law of War), it is one of the extant classical compositions that preserve the legal doctrines and reasoning of the early Iraqi school .

Scholarly Significance and Reception

The compilation played an essential role in recording and disseminating Abu Hanifa's rulings and the foundational hadiths of his circle . Abu Yusuf's transmissions were valued due to his standing as a memorizer of hadith; Yahya ibn Ma'in described him as the firmest and soundest in hadith transmission among the jurists of legal reasoning (ashab al-ra'y) . Ahmad ibn Hanbal related that he initially wrote hadith from Abu Yusuf upon beginning his studies, and al-Muzani remarked that Abu Yusuf was the most adherent among his peers to hadith .
