al-Asl al-Jami li-Idah al-Durar al-Manzuma fi Silk Jam al-Jawami is a two-volume treatise on legal theory (usul al-fiqh) by the Tunisian Maliki scholar Hasan al-Sinawni (d. after 1348 AH / 1929 CE), designed to correlate the principles of the Maliki school with the Shafi'i-based standard text Jam al-Jawami .
Scope and Methodology
The work centers on Jam al-Jawami, the foundational compendium of legal theory and theology composed by Taj al-Din al-Subki . Al-Sinawni structured the text to synthesize multiple poetic didactic texts (manzumat) across schools, integrating:
- The versification of Jam al-Jawami (known as al-Kawkab al-Sati) by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti .
- Maraqi al-Suud, the versification of Maliki legal fundamentals by Abd Allah ibn Ibrahim al-Alawi al-Shinqiti .
- Mahya al-Usul, the versification on legal methodology by Muhammad ibn Asim al-Maliki .
Al-Sinawni stated that his objective was to double the benefit and joy of Maliki scholars by uniting their school's methodology with the principles formulated within the Shafi'i legal tradition .
Institutional Approval and Publication
Al-Sinawni, who held a senior professorship in Quranic recitation sciences (ilm al-qiraat) at the Mosque of al-Zaytuna in Tunis, submitted the work to the Scientific Board (al-Nazarah al-Ilmiyyah) of al-Zaytuna . The board commended the treatise for its clear prose, extensive and accurate citations, and overall utility, granting formal approval for its printing on 22 Dhu al-Hijjah 1347 AH (June 1928 CE) . The authorization was endorsed by prominent scholars of the institution, including Ahmad Bayram, Muhammad al-Tahir Ibn Ashur, Muhammad Radwan, and Salih al-Maqali .
The book was printed in two volumes by Matbaat al-Nahdah in Tunis .
