al-Arbaun lil-Muayyad ibn Muhammad al-Tusi (The Forty Hadiths of al-Muayyad ibn Muhammad al-Tusi), formally titled Kitab al-Arba'in 'an al-mashayikh al-arba'in wa-al-arba'in sahabiyyan wa-sahabiyyah, is a collection of forty hadiths transmitted by the Khurasanian traditionist and reciter Abu al-Hasan al-Muayyad ibn Muhammad al-Tusi (524–617 AH / 1129–1220 CE) . The collection was compiled from al-Tusi's narrations by the scholar Abu al-Janab Ahmad ibn Umar al-Khiwaqi, known as Najm al-Din al-Kubra (d. 618 AH / 1221 CE) .

Composition and Structure

The work belongs to the forty-hadith genre and is structured according to a multifaceted scheme: forty traditions related from forty distinct shaykhs of al-Tusi, tracing back to forty distinct Companions, both male and female .

The text opens with reports encouraging the preservation and memorization of forty traditions for the Muslim community, citing narrations through Abu al-Darda, Abu Hurayrah, and Ibn Abbas . The main body begins with traditions transmitted from the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs:

  • The first hadith is narrated from Abu Bakr regarding the supplication taught to him by the Prophet ﷺ, received by al-Tusi from Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn al-Fadl al-Farawi in 530 AH through his chain to Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj .
  • The second hadith is the tradition of intentions ( إنما الأعمال بالنيات ) narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab, received from Abu al-Ma'ali Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Farisi via al-Bukhari's transmission line .
  • The third hadith is the description of ablution narrated from Uthman ibn Affan, received from Abu al-Barakat Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Farawi .

After each tradition, biographical information is provided regarding the respective teacher and narrator, recording their dates of birth and death, teachers, and standing among sixth-century AH hadith authorities .

Transmission and Reception

The collection was transmitted and cited in subsequent hadith literature as a testament to the scope and elevation of al-Tusi's chains of narration in Nishapur . Salah al-Din al-Ala'i included the collection in Itharat al-fawa'id al-majmu'ah, documenting his transmission of the work through al-Qasim ibn Muzaffar from Abu Salim Muhammad ibn Talha al-Nasibi, who heard it directly from al-Muayyad al-Tusi in Nishapur . Similarly, al-Sadr al-Bakri cited it in his own collection, noting that al-Tusi was the preeminent authority of high transmission (musnid waqtihi) of his era .

Publication

The work was edited and published by Dr. 'Amir Hasan Sabri and issued by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah in Beirut (1st edition, 1418 AH / 1998 CE) as the seventh volume in their series on hadith booklets and monographs (Silsilat al-Ajza' wa-al-Kutub al-Hadithiyyah) .
