al-Arbaun al-Quraniyya (Arabic: الأربعون القرآنية, lit. 'The Quranic Forty') is a forty-hadith collection compiled by Ahmad ibn Abd al-Razzaq Al Ibrahim al-Anqari, focusing on the virtues, rulings, and etiquettes of the Quran .

Composition and Context

The author completed the compilation of the work in Riyadh on 25 Dhu al-Hijjah 1427 AH . The text was presented to several contemporary scholars, receiving written introductions and endorsements from the hadith scholars Salih ibn Sa'd al-Luhaydan (dated 17 Muharram 1428 AH) and Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'd (dated 17 Rabi' al-Awwal 1428 AH) . Its first edition was funded by Abd al-Latif ibn Sulayman ibn Abd al-Latif Al Ibrahim al-Anqari and was registered in Riyadh in 1431 AH / 2010 CE in a single 48-page volume .

Structure and Content

The collection comprises forty authentic prophetic hadiths selected for their concise phrasing and clarity to facilitate memorization, understanding, and application . Following the tradition noted from Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, the author opens the text with the well-known intention hadith: إنَّما الأعمالُ بالنّياتِ ("Actions are judged only by intentions") . It also includes practical instructions and memorization methods for students of knowledge .

The material is organized into thematic chapters with headings formulated in a style inspired by al-Bukhari, deriving chapter titles directly from the selected hadiths and accompanied by explanatory commentary :

  • Chapter 1: Hadiths regarding the virtues of reciting and studying the Quran (fadail qira'at al-Quran wa-mudarasatih) .
  • Chapter 2: Hadiths regarding etiquettes and legal rulings (al-adab wa-l-ahkam) .
  • Chapter 3: Hadiths regarding the virtue of memorizing the Book of Allah and the reward of its adherents (fadl hifz Kitab Allah wa-jaza ahlih) .
  • Chapter 4: Hadiths urging regular review and maintenance of Quranic memorization (al-hathth ala ta'ahhud al-Quran wa-muraja'atih) .
  • Chapter 5: Hadiths regarding the desirability of beautifying one's voice when reciting the Quran (istihbab tajmil al-sawt bi-l-Quran) .
  • Chapter 6: Hadiths regarding sincerity of deeds for Allah (ikhlas al-amal lillah) .
  • Chapter 7: Hadiths concerning the virtues of specific surahs (fadail bad al-suwar) .

Method and Reception

The author aimed to emphasize that prophetic guidance on the Quran encompasses not merely melodious recitation and oral preservation, but also knowledge, reflection, and practice . In their commendations, scholars noted that the compilation does not seek to exhaust every transmitted report on the topic, but rather serves as a concise, structured reminder of authentic traditions concerning the obligations and virtues tied to the Quran .
