al-Amali wal-Qiraa (The Dictations and Recitation) is a ninth-century hadith booklet (juz') compiled from the narrations of the Kufan traditionist al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Affan al-Amiri (d. 270 AH / 883 CE) and his brother Muhammad .
Authorship and Scope
The work is attributed to Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Affan al-Kufi, as well as jointly to him and his brother Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Affan (d. 277 AH / 890 CE), under the extended title Juz' al-Amali wal-Qira'ah li-Ibnay Affan (The Part of Dictations and Recitation of the Two Sons of Affan) . It consists of prophetic traditions and early reports compiled with full chains of transmission (isnad), containing texts dictated (amali) or read aloud (qira'ah) in scholarly sessions, such as transmissions related through Kufan teachers like Ja'far ibn Awn .
Transmission and Reception
The primary transmission of the booklet passed from the two brothers to their student, the Kufan man of letters and hadith transmitter Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Zubayr al-Qurashi (d. 348 AH / 959 CE) . From Ibn al-Zubayr, it was narrated by Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Shadhan, and subsequently entered later Syrian and Egyptian hadith audition curricula through scholars such as Ibn al-Latti, Mas'ud ibn Muhammad ibn Shunif, and Abu Ishaq al-Tanukhi .
The text was studied, indexed, and transmitted by major later traditionists, including al-Dhahabi, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani—who recorded his transmission pathways for the work in both al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras and al-Majma' al-Mu'assas—as well as al-Suyuti in Anshab al-Kathab fi Ansab al-Kutub and al-Sakhawi, who noted hearing and reciting it during his studies .
Editions
The work was edited by Mus'ad Abd al-Hamid al-Sa'dani and published by Dar al-Sahabah lil-Turath in Tanta (1413 AH / 1992–1993 CE) .
