al-Amali fi Athar al-Sahaba (Dictations on the Traditions of the Companions), also cited simply as al-Amali, is a hadith compilation by the Yemeni scholar Abu Bakr Abd al-Razzaq ibn Hammam al-Sanani (d. 211 AH / 826–827 CE) comprising dictated reports and traditions related to prophetic hadiths and the rulings and virtues of the Companions.
Content and Structure
The work belongs to the amālī (dictation sessions) genre, containing chains of transmission (isnads) and narrations transmitted by Abd al-Razzaq from prominent authorities, such as Ma'mar ibn Rashid, Sufyan al-Thawri, and Abu Ja'far al-Razi, on matters of legal practice, prophetic traditions, and reports from the Companions. Scholars have noted that the collection offers clear insight into Abd al-Razzaq's narrations regarding the Companions.
Transmission and Reception
The text was transmitted from Abd al-Razzaq by his student Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Ramadi (d. 265 AH), from whom it was narrated by scholars such as Ismail ibn Muhammad al-Saffar.
Later scholars cited and utilized the book as a source for hadith verification and biography, including:
- Ibn Abd al-Barr in al-Tamhid
- Ibn Kathir in Musnad al-Faruq
- Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, who listed it in al-Mu'jam al-mufahras and cited it in Fath al-Bari and al-Isaba fi Tamyiz al-Sahaba, noting that he received transmission for parts two and four of the work
- Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti in al-La'ali al-masnu'a
- Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Rudani in Silat al-khalaf
