al-Ahadith allati khulif fiha Malik ibn Anas (Arabic: الأحاديث التي خولف فيها مالك بن أنس, lit. 'The Hadiths in Which Malik ibn Anas Was Contradicted') is a specialized work of hadith criticism (ʿilal) by the Baghdadi traditionist al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH / 918–995 CE) . The book examines instances where Malik ibn Anas (d. 179 AH) diverged from other narrators in his transmissions from common teachers, as well as instances where Malik himself transmitted a hadith in al-Muwatta' in one form and outside it in another .

Subject and Method

The work compiles narrations where Malik’s transmission from shared teachers differed from those of his contemporaries and fellow disciples . As indicated in its manuscript title, the author composed it concisely rather than exhaustively (mukhtaṣaran ghayr mustaqṣā) .

Al-Daraqutni organizes the material primarily by the shaykhs whom Malik reported from, beginning with Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, followed by figures such as Hisham ibn Urwa, Khubayb ibn Abd al-Rahman, Hilal ibn Ali ibn Usama, Humayd al-A'raj, Ja'far al-Sadiq, Thawr ibn Zayd al-Dili, Abu Suhayl Nafi' ibn Malik, Afif ibn Amr, Abu al-Zinad, and Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Ansari . In each entry, al-Daraqutni cites the narration as reported by Malik, contrasts it with how other prominent preservers—such as Ma'mar ibn Rashid, Yunus ibn Yazid al-Ayli, Sufyan al-Thawri, Sufyan ibn Uyayna, Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamza, Uqayl ibn Khalid, and Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan—related it from the same teacher, and provides critical assessments to establish the correct transmission (al-ṣawāb) .

The types of discrepancies highlighted in the text include:

  • Differences in chain connectivity (isnād), where Malik reported a tradition as interrupted (mursal) while others connected it (mawṣūl), or where Malik shortened an isnad by omitting a narrator .
  • Attribution differences, such as raising a report directly to the Prophet (marfūʿ) versus halting it at a Companion (mawqūf) .
  • Naming or lineage divergences concerning intermediate figures in the isnad .
  • Variations in textual phrasing (matn) or geographical details within the text of the hadith .
  • Differences between Malik’s own transmission within al-Muwatta' and how he or his students transmitted the same hadith outside it .

Transmission and Reception

The book was preserved and transmitted across several scholarly lineages. Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili (d. 575 AH) recorded two transmission paths for the work: one via Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Mawhab from Abu al-Walid al-Baji, from Abu Dharr al-Harawi, from al-Daraqutni; and another through Ibn al-Arabi from Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Tuyuri, from Abu Talib Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Fath al-Harbi, from al-Daraqutni by authorization (ijāzah) . A manuscript audition note also documents its transmission through Abu Tahir al-Silafi in 572 AH via Abu al-Hasan al-Mubarak ibn Abd al-Jabbar from Abu Talib al-Harbi from al-Daraqutni .

The work is attributed to al-Daraqutni by biographical and bibliographical authors, including Ibn Khayr in his Fahrasa and al-Dhahabi in Siyar aʿlām al-nubalāʾ . Its critical determinations are frequently cited by later commentators and hadith scholars, such as Ibn Abd al-Barr in al-Tamhid and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in Fath al-Bari .

Manuscripts and Publication

A manuscript of the work is preserved at the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under collection no. 63/21 (fols. 255a–267b, extended to 270), with photographic copies held at al-Maktaba al-Siddiqiyya in Mecca (collection no. 16 hadith) and at the Islamic University of Medina .

The work has been edited by Abu Abd al-Bari Rida ibn Khalid and published in Riyadh by Maktabat al-Rushd and Sharikat al-Riyadh (1st edition, 1418 AH / 1997 CE) .
