al-Ahadith al-Warida fi al-Ayn: Haqiqatuha wal-Wiqaya wal-Ilaj (Hadiths Regarding the Evil Eye: Its Reality, Prevention, and Treatment) is a hadith study by Husayn bin Ghazi al-Tuwayjiri dedicated to gathering, critically authenticating, and explaining the prophetic narrations pertaining to the evil eye .
Context and Purpose
The treatise was written to examine the reality of the evil eye (al-ayn), its physical impact, ways to guard against it, and methods of seeking healing from it according to the Sunnah . The author noted that prior works touching upon the topic—such as studies by Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Tayyar, Khalid ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Shayi', Usama ibn Yasin al-Ma'ani, Hamdan ibn Muhammad al-Hamdan, and Muhammad ibn Abd al-Mu'ti Sinjab—did not focus primarily on hadith-critical methodology and were often limited to citing references without in-depth hadith appraisal . In comparing his work with that of Sinjab, al-Tuwayjiri identified eight additional hadiths not included in Sinjab's book . The research was published in the Journal of the Islamic University of Medina for Sharia Sciences in Rabi' al-Thani 1441 AH .
Structure
The work consists of an introduction, two main chapters (mabhath), and a conclusion with indices :
- Introduction: Outlines the importance of the topic, the outline, and the author's methodological approach to hadith collection and criticism .
- Chapter One: Divided into three sub-topics (matalib):
- The linguistic and technical definition of the evil eye .
- The distinction between the envier (al-hasid) and the caster of the evil eye (al-a'in) .
- The mention of the evil eye in the Quran .
- Chapter Two: Divided into three sub-topics:
- Hadiths affirming the reality of affliction by the evil eye .
- Hadiths regarding precautions and protection against the evil eye .
- Hadiths regarding seeking cure and medical/spiritual treatment (istishfa') from the evil eye .
- Conclusion: Summarizes the primary findings of the research, followed by an index of bibliography and sources, and a subject index .
Methodology
Al-Tuwayjiri gathered narrations from the primary source collections of hadith (kutub al-sunnah al-musnadah) according to the following approach :
- If a hadith is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, or both, he confines its attribution to them, occasionally citing the four Sunan or other collections when doing so provides an additional textual or chain-related benefit .
- If it is not found in al-Sahihayn, he attributes it to the compilers of the four Sunan and evaluates its authenticity, citing other works if they contain relevant variations .
- If not found in the Sunan, he extracts it from other musnad works, arranging sources chronologically by author death year, followed by an appraisal of the isnad after assessing supporting paths (mutaba'at and shawahid) without seeking exhaustive enumeration .
- For narrators requiring biographical evaluation, he relies on Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Taqrib al-Tahdhib for narrators of the Six Books unless critical evidence indicates otherwise; for other narrators, he provides concise biographical notices from relevant biographical dictionaries .
- The author also defines rare words (gharib), quotes classical commentators on the legal and conceptual implications of the texts, vocalizes challenging names and terms, and applies standard punctuation .
