al-Ahadith al-Mi'a al-Sharihiyya (Arabic: الأحاديث المائة الشريحية, lit. 'The Hundred Shurayhite Hadiths') is a hadith collection compiled from the narrations of the Herati traditionist Ibn Abi Shurayh (d. 392 AH / 1002 CE; also reported 391 AH) .

Background and Content

The work is an independent hadith tract (juz') bearing the full descriptive title Juz' fihi al-Ahadith al-Mi'a al-Majmu'a min Masmu'at al-Shaykh Abi Muhammad 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Shurayh al-Ansari . It gathers one hundred prophetic traditions drawn from what Ibn Abi Shurayh received from his teachers, including Isma'il ibn al-'Abbas al-Warraq and others . The collection covers various religious subjects, particularly the merits of righteous acts and pious deeds (fadilat a'mal al-birr), manners of prayer and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and eschatological themes such as seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave .

The opening tradition in the collection is narrated through al-Hasan ibn 'Arafa from 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, in which the Prophet ﷺ said: مَا دُعَاءٌ إِلا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ حِجَابٌ حَتَّى يُصَلَّى عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ ("No supplication is made except that there is a veil between it and heaven until blessings are invoked upon Muhammad and upon his family") .

Transmission and Reception

The text achieved widespread circulation through the chain of Ibn Abi Shurayh's direct student, Abu 'Asim al-Fudayl ibn Yahya al-Fudayli . Abu 'Asim transmitted it to the renowned transmitter Abu al-Waqt al-Sijzi (d. 553 AH), who in turn transmitted it to Ibn al-Latti (Abu al-Munajja 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar al-Baghdadi) in Sha'ban 553 AH . Ibn al-Latti subsequently taught the work in Aleppo during Dhu al-Qa'da 634 AH and across other scholarly centers .

Generations of subsequent traditionists and jurists received and taught al-Ahadith al-Mi'a al-Sharihiyya, and its chains of transmission were preserved in prominent bibliographical and pedagogical records, including those of al-Wadi Ashi and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti . Individual narrations from the work were also analyzed and cited by later hadith critics, such as Ibn 'Iraq and Ibn al-Muhibb al-Samit .
