al-Ahadith al-Daifa wal-Mawdua allati hakama alayha al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir fi Tafsirihi (The Weak and Fabricated Hadiths Evaluated by al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir in His Tafsir) is a hadith reference work compiled by Abu Abd al-Rahman Mahmud ibn Muhammad al-Mallah . The book isolates, organizes, and annotates the prophetic narrations that Ibn Kathir explicitly declared weak (da'if) or fabricated (mawdu'), or whose weakness he cited from other scholars with approval, in his Quranic commentary Tafsir al-Quran al-Azim .
Composition and Purpose
The compiler completed the work in Riyadh on 16 Sha'ban 1430 AH (August 2009) . It features a foreword written by Abd Allah ibn Mani al-Rawqi in Jumada al-Ula 1431 AH (April 2010) and was published by Maktabat al-Ulum wal-Hikam . The objective of the compilation was to provide readers and students of Ibn Kathir's Tafsir with an accessible single-volume reference gathering the author's critical assessments of unauthentic narrations scattered throughout his commentary . In his foreword, al-Rawqi commended the effort while noting that it remained focused exclusively on narrations Ibn Kathir actively critiqued, leaving open the task of examining those weak reports on which Ibn Kathir remained silent .
Structure and Methodology
The work opens with an introductory section (tamhid) highlighting Ibn Kathir's methodology and scholarly scrupulousness, such as his recording of the phrase "and God knows best" (wa-Allahu a'lam) exactly 824 times in his commentary .
The main body of the text adheres to the following editorial method:
- Arrangement: Hadiths are ordered sequentially according to the surahs of the Quran, with their exact locations marked by surah name and verse number to facilitate cross-referencing across different editions of the Tafsir .
- Numbering: Narrations are assigned a continuous sequential numbering that excludes duplicates, cross-referencing repeated reports to their first occurrence .
- Isnad Truncation: Chains of transmission are truncated directly to the Companion narrator, except in instances where Ibn Kathir's critique specifically pertained to elements of the chain itself .
- Textual Source and Annotation: The author relied on the Dar Taybah edition of Tafsir Ibn Kathir edited by Sami al-Salamah (1422 AH), adding explanatory footnotes that frequently incorporate the critical rulings of modern hadith scholars Ahmad Shakir and Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani . Where Ibn Kathir commented on a weak narration without recording its text, al-Mallah provided the wording (matn) in full .
- Indexes: The volume concludes with alphabetical indexes organized by hadith incipits (atraf), indicating the entry number, surah and verse, Companion narrator, and a concise summary of Ibn Kathir's evaluation .
