al-Adab al-Mufrad - bi-Ahkam al-Albani is a critical edition of the classic hadith collection on Islamic ethics and conduct compiled by al-Bukhari (194–256 AH / 810–870 CE), featuring the hadith gradings and critical evaluations of Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani .

Background and Scope

The foundational text, al-Adab al-Mufrad, was authored by al-Bukhari as a standalone compilation devoted entirely to moral character, personal manners, social obligations, and familial relationships, distinct from the dedicated chapter on etiquette (Kitab al-Adab) in his primary collection, Sahih al-Bukhari . Unlike his Sahih, al-Bukhari did not restrict the narrations in al-Adab al-Mufrad strictly to rigorously authentic reports, incorporating both prophetic traditions (marfu') as well as statements and practices attributed to the Companions and Successors (athar) .

In the twentieth century, al-Albani examined the chains of transmission (isnad) throughout the work in accordance with hadith criticism, assessing the authenticity of each narrative and classifying the material into authentic (sahih) and weak (da'if) categories .

Structure and Editions

Al-Albani's critical engagement with al-Adab al-Mufrad resulted in editions where his judgments (ahkam) accompany the text, as well as split companion volumes:

  • Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad: Compiling the narrations evaluated as authentic or sound .
  • Da'if al-Adab al-Mufrad: Gathering the narrations classified as weak or unsubstantiated .

The edited work has been published in multiple formats, including combined editions featuring both authentic and weak classifications alongside the original compilation . In addition to al-Albani's verification, the original work of al-Bukhari has also been the subject of commentary and explanation by other scholars, notably Fadl Allah al-Jilani in his Fadl Allah al-Samad fi Tawdih al-Adab al-Mufrad .
