al-Abatil wa al-Manakir wa al-Sihah wa al-Mashahir (Falsehoods, Reprehensible Narrations, Authentic Hadiths, and Famous Reports) is a hadith compendium by Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ibrahim al-Jurqani (d. 543 AH / 1148 CE) dedicated to identifying fabricated and weak traditions and contrasting them with established, authentic narrations .
Method and Structure
The work is also referenced under titles such as al-Abatil and al-Mawdu'at . Its primary aim is to distinguish fabricated (mawdu'at) and defective (wahiyah) traditions from authentic reports . In organizing the text, al-Jurqani typically quotes a frail narration, analyzes its chain of transmission, and details its defect ('illah). He then introduces a contrasting section titled "Chapter on what contradicts that" (باب في خلاف ذلك), in which he cites an authentic hadith whose apparent meaning refutes the spurious report .
In his biographical evaluations of narrators, al-Jurqani relied predominantly on early hadith critics up to the era of Ibn Hibban . For narrators living after Ibn Hibban's time, he frequently declared reports defective by asserting that their transmitters were unknown (majahil), even though many of them were well-known figures (mashahir) . Additionally, he frequently judged narrations to be fabricated on the basis of their direct conflict with explicit authentic Sunnah .
Reception and Influence
Later scholars made extensive use of the book while noting specific methodological reservations:
- Ibn al-Najjar recorded in Dhayl Tarikh Baghdad that al-Jurqani produced several works on hadith, describing his collection on fabricated traditions as well-composed .
- Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi stated in Tabaqat al-Huffaz that he consulted and benefited from the work despite the presence of errors (awham) within it, observing that al-Jurqani effectively clarified the invalidity of unreliable narrations by setting them against authentic ones . Al-Dhahabi also prepared an abridged selection drawing from it and Ibn al-Jawzi's al-Mawdu'at, titled Ahadith Mukhtarah min al-Abatil lil-Jurqani wa Ghayrihi (Selected Hadiths from al-Jurqani's Falsehoods and Others) .
- Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani remarked in Lisan al-Mizan that several of al-Jurqani's individual rulings remained subject to scholarly debate and scrutiny .
- Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti incorporated al-Jurqani's judgments into his critical work al-La'ali al-Masnu'ah fi al-Ahadith al-Mawdu'ah, utilizing the Arabic letter jim (ج) as a technical symbol to signify where al-Jurqani agreed on declaring a narration fabricated .
Editions
The work has been edited by Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Jabbar al-Fariwa'i, first published in Banaras, India (1403 AH / 1983 CE), and later reissued in multiple editions, including by Dar al-Sumay'i in Riyadh .
