Akhbar al-Dajjal (Reports Concerning the Antichrist) is a specialized hadith monograph compiled by the Hanbali traditionist Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (541–600 AH / 1146–1203 CE) that collects prophetic traditions and early narrations concerning the False Messiah (al-Masih al-Dajjal) .
Content and Method
The work compiles narrations detailing the eschatological figure of the Dajjal, his physical descriptions, the signs preceding his emergence, and related historical reports regarding figures such as Ibn Sayyad (Ibn Sa'id) . Al-Maqdisi transmits reports through his own chains of narration (asānīd) via authorities such as Abu al-Qasim Yahya ibn Thabit al-Baghdadi and Muhammad ibn Abi al-Fath in Tripoli, cross-referencing them with major compilations such as Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hanbal .
Throughout the text, the author incorporates critical commentary on transmission chains—classifying narrations as sound (ṣaḥīḥ), fair (ḥasan), or weak (ḍaʿīf)—and offers reconciling remarks on related subjects, such as distinguishing Ibn Sayyad from the greater Dajjal described in the account of Tamim al-Dari .
Supplement and Publication
The work includes a supplement (tadhyīl) compiled by the historian and traditionist al-Dhahabi (673–748 AH / 1274–1348 CE) . It was published in a single volume by Dar al-Sahaba lil-Turath in Tanta (1413 AH / 1993 CE) .
