Akhbar Abi Hafs Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (Arabic: أخبار أبي حفص عمر بن عبد العزيز) is a concise biographical collection compiled with chains of transmission by the hadith scholar Abu Bakr al-Ajurri (d. 360 AH / 970 CE), documenting the virtues and conduct of the Umayyad caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz .
Scope and Method
Also titled Akhbar Abi Hafs Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz wa-Siratuh, the work is arranged as a narrated traditionary compilation (musnad) following the method of the hadith scholars . Rather than attempting a comprehensive record of historical events across the caliph's life, al-Ajurri restricted the text to a select biography and an account of his virtues, comprising approximately thirty-five narrated reports . The reports address various facets of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz's life, certain theological and creedal statements attributed to him, as well as several exaggerated narratives .
Transmission and Publication
The work was recorded in biographical and bibliographical registers, including Hajji Khalifa's Kashf al-Zunun and al-Suyuti's Anshab al-Kathab . It was transmitted through chains of audition documented by late scholars; Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani recorded his chain of transmission for the booklet (juz') back to al-Ajurri through lines including Zaynab bint al-Kamal via Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Malik ibn Bushran .
The text has been edited by Dr. Abd Allah Abd al-Rahim Usaylan and published in Beirut .
