Ahwal al-Rijal (The Conditions of Transmitters) is a 3rd-century AH biographical evaluation work on hadith narrators by the traditionist Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Ya'qub al-Juzjani (d. 259 AH / 872 CE; also reported 256 AH) .

Subject and Structure

The work belongs to the genre of narrator criticism (al-jarh wa-al-ta'dil) and focuses primarily on weak, impugned, and untrustworthy transmitters (al-du'afa'), as well as individuals associated with theological innovations . Transmitters are grouped and evaluated according to categories of impairment, including doctrinal deviations such as the Kharijites (the Haruriyyah), the Qadariyyah, and Shi'ism, in addition to defective memory and deliberate fabrication .

In addition to al-Juzjani’s independent critical judgments, the book records numerous direct assessments and narrations transmitted from his teacher Ahmad ibn Hanbal . In classical references and manuscript catalogues, the treatise is also cited under titles such as al-Du'afa' and al-Shajarah fi Ahwal al-Rijal (or al-Shajarah min Ahwal al-Rijal) .

Reception and Scholarly Critique

Ahwal al-Rijal served as an early reference for subsequent hadith critics and biographical encyclopedists, including Ibn 'Adi, Ibn al-Jawzi, and Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani .

Later scholars highlighted al-Juzjani's severity when criticizing narrators who hailed from Kufa or who were inclined toward Shi'ism. Because early authorities such as al-Daraqutni and Ibn 'Adi noted his bias against Ali and his adoption of the pro-Umayyad stance prevalent in Damascus (nasb), Ibn Hajar observed that the entries in Ahwal al-Rijal clearly reflect this doctrinal leaning and that his criticisms of Shi'i-leaning transmitters must be evaluated in light of it .

Manuscripts and Publication

Manuscript copies of the treatise are preserved at the Zahiriyyah Library in Damascus . The text was edited by Subhi al-Badri al-Samarra'i and published by Mu'assasat al-Risalah in Beirut in 1405 AH / 1985 CE .
