Ahkam al-Janaiz (Ahkām al-Janāʾiz wa-Bidaʿuhā, "The Rulings of Funerals and Their Innovations") is a legal and hadith treatise by the Syrian-Albanian hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) outlining the Islamic rulings, obligations, and common innovations associated with death and funerals .

Composition and Publication

Al-Albani completed the preface to the work in Damascus on 24 Muharram 1388 AH (1968 CE) . Publication had originally been scheduled for 1385 AH (1965 CE) after type was set, but printing at al-Maktab al-Islami stalled between Dhu al-Qiʿda 1384 AH and mid-Rabiʿ al-Awwal 1388 AH, concluding in Shaʿban 1388 AH .

Contents and Structure

The book addresses the stages of funeral rites and mourning in chronological sequence:

  • What is incumbent upon the relatives of the deceased, including patience, submission to divine decree, uttering the formula of istirjaʿ, and mourning restrictions (ihdad) for a widow .
  • Prohibited mourning practices, such as wailing, slapping cheeks, tearing clothes, and announcing death from minarets .
  • Permissible ways of announcing death (al-naʿy al-jaʾiz) .
  • Signs indicating a righteous end (husn al-khatima) and the praise of the living for the deceased .
  • The washing of the body (ghusl), shrouding, funeral prayer, burial, and grave visitation .

The Section on Innovations

The work concludes with a comprehensive chapter cataloging innovated practices (bidaʿ) related to funerals . Al-Albani drew this material from notes he had compiled from dozens of classical and contemporary legal texts as part of a planned dictionary of religious innovations .

For each practice, he recorded the text or gist of the ruling and cited the specific book, volume, and page number; where no external citation is appended, it reflects an innovation he identified directly through general legal principles, including contemporary innovations .

Abridgment

To make its practical guidance accessible during times of bereavement without requiring the reader to navigate extensive hadith citations, al-Albani produced an abridged version titled Talkhis Ahkam al-Janaiz (Talkhīṣ Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz) . He also noted that an unauthorized abridgment had previously been published in Egypt without his permission or knowledge .
