Ahadith wa Hikayat lil-Salafi (Traditions and Anecdotes Selected by al-Silafi) is a concise hadith booklet (juz') compiled by the hadith master Abu Tahir al-Silafi (d. 576 AH / 1180 CE), consisting of selections he made from the personal manuscript collections (usul) of his teacher Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ali al-Tabari .
Background and Compilation
Abu Tahir Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Silafi al-Isfahani compiled this selection during his travels in Mecca in the year 497 AH, where he heard and selected traditions directly from the original works of the Shafi'i scholar Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Tabari (d. 498 AH) . The collection represents an intikhab (critical selection), a practice wherein a scholar chose select hadiths, narrations, and biographical or historical accounts from the extensive notebooks of an elder master .
Contents and Structure
The work comprises 47 numbered textual units containing Prophetic traditions, historical anecdotes (hikayat), verses of poetry, and scholarly sayings . The material is organized by the sub-transmitters and teachers through whom al-Tabari received the material across multiple Islamic scholarly centers, including Nishapur, Herat, Marw, Aden, Basra, and Isfahan :
- Transmissions through specific teachers: Sub-sections are demarcated by explicit concluding notes, such as traditions transmitted via Abu Hafs Umar ibn Ahmad ibn Masrur al-Muqri' from Ibn Nujayd, Abu Amir al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Nasawi, Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Yazdi in Aden, Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Majid ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Qurashi in Aden, Abu al-Fath Nasir ibn al-Husayn al-Umari in Nishapur, and Abu Uthman Ismail ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sabuni .
- Topics and texts: The traditions span various subjects, including filial piety, the primacy of intention, ritual purification, trade ethics, warnings against pride, and virtues of the Prophet's family and companions . It includes verses recited by Abu al-Fath al-Busti, maxims by early authorities such as Sufyan al-Thawri and al-Sha'bi, and anecdotes such as students entering upon Sufyan ibn Uyaynah and the correspondence between al-Waqidi and the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun .
Transmission and Manuscript Tradition
The collection was transmitted from al-Silafi by authorization (ijazah) to the judge Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Shakir ibn Isa ibn Makhlaf al-Himyari, a scholar who held a teaching chair at the Old Mosque (al-Jami' al-Atiq) in Egypt .
A surviving manuscript of the work is preserved in the Zahiriyyah Library in Damascus within the Umariyyah collection (Majmu' no. 55, piece 7, fols. 73–80, spanning 7 folios), from which copies have also been documented in the manuscript library in Kuwait and the Central Library in Mecca .
