Ahadith Muntakhaba min Kitab Amarat al-Nubuwa

Ahadith Muntakhaba min Kitab Amarat al-Nubuwa (Selected Hadiths from the Book of Signs of Prophecy) is a preserved hadith selection extracted from the otherwise lost work Amarat al-Nubuwa by the hadith scholar Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Ya'qub al-Juzjani (d. 259 AH / 873 CE), focusing on the miracles and proofs of Muhammad's prophethood .

Origin and Transmission

The parent work, Amarat al-Nubuwa, was an early compendium dedicated to the signs of prophethood, but the full original text has been lost . What survives is a small excerpt titled Ahadith Muntakhaba min al-Juz' al-Sadis min Kitab Amarat al-Nubuwa, preserving thirteen hadiths with full chains of transmission (asānīd) selected exclusively from the original work's sixth part . The identity of the scholar who made the selection and the specific criteria used for the compilation remain unknown .

The text was transmitted from al-Juzjani through his student Abu al-Dahdah Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Qasmi . The transmission chain recorded in the manuscript includes auditions read before Abu al-Qasim Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Ta'an in Sha'ban 370 AH, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Musa ibn al-Simsar, Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Mudarrib al-Taghlibi in 480 AH, Abu al-Majd Fityan ibn Haydar al-Bajali in eastern Damascus in Ramadan 567 AH, and Abu al-Khayr Salamah ibn Ibrahim al-Haddad, with an audition noted for Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Qasim .

Contents

The collection comprises thirteen narrated traditions detailing events illustrative of the Prophet's character and miracles . Among the reports included are accounts of the bargaining and purchase of Jabir's camel , the multiplication of dates and the miraculous milking of a goat for the army , a date-palm stalk (ʿurjūn) lighting the way home for Qatadah ibn al-Nu'man in intense darkness , walking sticks and fingers emitting light for Companions traveling at night , and the miraculous relief of Abu Umamah's hunger and thirst while on a mission to the tribe of Bahilah .

Publication

The tract was edited by Dr. Abd al-Alim Abd al-Azim al-Bastawi and published in 1411 AH / 1990 CE in Faisalabad, Pakistan by Hadith Academy and in Riyadh by Dar al-Tahawi . It was printed as a supplementary text alongside al-Juzjani's biographical dictionary on transmitters, Ahwal al-Rijal (also known as al-Shajarah fi Ahwal al-Rijal) .
