Ahadith Mukhtara min Mawduat al-Jurqani wa Ibn al-Jawzi (Selected Hadiths from the Fabrications of al-Jurqani and Ibn al-Jawzi) is a hadith critical work by the Damascene historian and hadith master Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (d. 748 AH / 1348 CE), comprising an analytical selection of forged and defective narrations drawn from earlier compilations of fabricated traditions .

Scope and Method

The work constitutes an abridgment and critical review of traditions recorded in the fabrication compendia of al-Jurqani (al-Abatil wa al-Manakir) and Ibn al-Jawzi (Kitab al-Mawdu'at) . In compiling these selections, al-Dhahabi records the transmitted chains of narration and subjects both the reports and the judgments of earlier critics to evaluation .

Throughout the text, al-Dhahabi frequently endorses the rulings of fabrication, often characterizing severely flawed chains as "utter darkness" (sanaduhu zulumat) or denouncing individual fabricators and spurious texts . In other instances, he offers independent critical assessments; he refutes al-Jurqani's occasional authentication of problematic narrations , and he sometimes moderates strict judgments of fabrication, noting when a report may instead be an acceptable mursal (hurried) narration despite chain interruptions .

Publication

The work was edited by Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Jabbar al-Fariwa'i and published in a single volume by Maktabat al-Dar in Medina in 1404 AH (1984 CE) .
