Ahadith Mu'allal Zahiruha al-Sihha (Hadiths Possessing Hidden Defects Whose Outward Appearance is Authenticity) is a hadith critical work by the Yemeni scholar Muqbil bin Hadi al-Wadii (d. 1422 AH / 2001 CE) devoted to identifying hidden defects ('ilal) in prophetic traditions that outwardly appear sound .

Origin and Composition

The genesis of the work arose while al-Wadi'i was compiling his collection al-Sahih al-Musnad mimma laysa fi al-Sahihayn (The Verified Musnad of What Is Not in the Two Sahihs) . During his research, he encountered traditions whose chains of transmission appeared authentic on the surface, but which hadith critics had declared defective in other classical reference works . Concerned that contemporary researchers might assume such traditions met the criteria for his authentic collection, he set aside a notebook to record them, compiling roughly four hundred traditions for the original version .

The work was known earlier under the title Ahadith Zahiruha al-Sihha wa-hiya Mu'allala . The text was transcribed on a typewriter and arranged in musnad format by Husayn ibn Muhammad Manna' with the assistance of Salih ibn Salih Manna', while Muhammad ibn Qa'id al-Hajuri reviewed the compilation and offered annotations .

Structure and Method

The book is arranged according to the individual Companions' narrations ('ala al-masanid), opening with the narration of Abi al-Lahm . In each entry, al-Wadi'i quotes the hadith with its chain of transmission and primary source, identifies why its apparent authenticity is misleading, and details the hidden defect—such as concealed omission (inqita'), non-audition between narrators, or an unmentioned intermediary—drawing primarily on the judgments of classical critics and biographical dictionaries .

The material was later studied and reviewed in teaching sessions at Dar al-Hadith in Dammaj, leading to the addition of more than one hundred hadiths to the collection through al-Wadi'i's continued research and contributions from students and peers .

Reception and Controversies

Following its initial release, the writer Ali Rida published a critical article titled Ma Hakadha Tu'allu al-Ahadith (Not in This Manner Are Hadiths Declared Defective), challenging al-Wadi'i's critique of four narrations on the grounds that supporting chains and corroborating routes had been overlooked . Al-Wadi'i addressed these criticisms through summary remarks in the text and authored a detailed rebuttal titled Gharat al-Fasl 'ala al-Mu'tadin 'ala Kutub al-'Ilal .

The findings in the book also led al-Wadi'i to retract his earlier authentication of around fifty hadiths in his own works; in the later editions of his al-Jami' al-Sahih mimma laysa fi al-Sahihayn, these retracted reports were retained alongside notes directing readers to Ahadith Mu'allal Zahiruha al-Sihha for the explanation of their defects .

Publication

A revised, indexed second edition, containing more than one hundred additional hadiths, was published in 1421 AH / 2000 CE by Dar al-Athar in Sanaa at the request of the publisher Sa'id ibn 'Umar Hubayshan al-Hadrami .
