Ahadith Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani (Arabic: أحاديث أيوب السختياني, The Hadiths of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani) is a monograph of hadith transmissions (juz'), compiled by the Maliki jurist and judge Isma'il ibn Ishaq al-Qadi (199/200–282 AH / 815/816–895 CE) . The text brings together narrations transmitted through the prominent Basran Successor Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani (d. 131 AH / 748/749 CE) .

Scope and Methodology

The work belongs to the genre of single-narrator hadith collections (ajza'), focusing on the corpus transmitted through Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani . Al-Qadi Isma'il—whose own family descended from Ayyub's major pupil Hammad ibn Zayd—records narrations from Ayyub through various intermediary chains, drawing directly from his own teachers, including Sulayman ibn Harb, 'Aram Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Hajjaj ibn Minhal, Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj, Mahmud ibn Ghaylan, and Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd ibn Hisab .

Through these authorities, the author records reports from second-generation transmitters after Ayyub—such as Hammad ibn Zayd, Hammad ibn Salama, Isma'il ibn Ulayya, Wuheyb, and Ma'mar ibn Rashid—who in turn narrate from Ayyub's authorities, such as Abu Qilaba Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Jarmi .

Beyond merely listing narrations, al-Qadi Isma'il employs critical hadith comparison, documenting differences in isnad formulations among Ayyub's transmitters . He explicitly highlights discrepancies such as when a report is transmitted as an uninterrupted attribution to the Prophet ﷺ (marfu') versus a non-prophetic halting attribution (mawquf), or when one narrator delivers a hadith with an omitted link (mursal) while another provides a fully connected chain (musnad) .

Manuscripts and Publication

The work is also recorded in bibliographical and manuscript catalogs under the fuller title Tanqih ahadith Ayyub ibn Abi Tamima al-Sakhtiyani .

A manuscript copy is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (Majmu' 4/2, folios 34–48) . The work was edited by Sulayman ibn Abd al-Aziz al-'Urayni and published in one volume under the title Juz' fihi min ahadith al-Imam Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani by Maktabat al-Rushd and Sharikat al-Riyad in Saudi Arabia (first edition, 1418 AH / 1998 CE) .
