Ahadith Awali li al-Dumyati (Elevated Hadiths of al-Dumyati) is a short hadith monograph compiled by the Shafi'i hadith scholar Sharaf al-Din Abd al-Mumin ibn Khalaf al-Dumyati (613–705 AH / 1216–1306 CE) . The work gathers traditions transmitted with elevated chains of narration (isnad 'ali) and analyzes their technical relationships to the major canonical collections .
Title and Composition
The manuscript opens under the full descriptive title Juz' fihi Ahadith 'Awali min al-Aqwal wa-al-Muwafaqat wa-al-Tusa'iyyat wa-al-Musafahat wa-al-Anashid wa-al-Maqtu'at (Part Containing Elevated Hadiths of Sayings, Concordances, Nine-Tier Chains, Handshakes, Chants, and Poetic Pieces) . The collection was extracted by al-Dumyati from his own auditory receipts from numerous teachers across centers such as Alexandria, Cairo, Damascus, Aleppo, Hama, and Baghdad . A recorded audition took place before the compiler at al-Madrasah al-Zahiriyya in Cairo on Sunday, 19 Rajab 699 AH .
Structure and Method
The treatise comprises eighteen numbered hadith narrations alongside several poetic selections . It opens with the well-known primordial chain (hadith al-awwaliyya), in which the Prophet ﷺ stated: الرَّاحِمُونَ يَرْحَمُهُمُ الرَّحْمَنُ، ارْحَمُوا أَهْلَ الأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ ("The merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful; show mercy to those on earth, and the One in heaven will show mercy to you") .
Subsequent traditions cover a range of legal, moral, and historical subjects, including:
- Descriptions of the Prophet's character and courage .
- The prohibition of swearing by one's ancestors .
- The peace treaty of al-Hudaybiyya and the care of Hamza's daughter .
- The virtues and specific formulations of the Islamic greeting .
- The censure of dragging garments out of pride .
- Seeing the Seal of Prophethood upon the Prophet's shoulder .
- Manners of eating with the right hand .
- The prohibition of temporary marriage (mut'a) and domestic donkey meat at Khaybar .
- The narration of the delegation of Abd al-Qays regarding faith and religious obligations .
Following each transmission, al-Dumyati appends critical commentary evaluating the height of the chain in relation to compilers such as al-Bukhari, Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud al-Sijistani, and al-Nasa'i . He identifies where his chains constitute a muwafaqa (concordance through an earlier teacher), a badal 'ali (an elevated alternate route), or a musafaha (parity in chain length, effectively matching the rank of an early master's students) .
Poetic Additions
The text incorporates verses recited to al-Dumyati by contemporary scholars and literary figures, such as Ibn al-Halawi al-Mawsili and Ibn Abi al-Hadid al-Mada'ini, as well as verses composed by al-Dumyati himself on the virtue of hadith study and the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ . The collection concludes with verses composed by al-Dumyati in Sha'ban 699 AH reflecting on his forty nine-tier narrations (al-Arba'un al-Tusa'iyyat) .
