Ahadith al-Jamaeili (Ahadith al-Jama'ili) is a hadith compendium compiled by the Hanbali scholar Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (541–600 AH / 1146–1203 CE), gathering narrations transmitted through his own chains of transmission .
Title and Nature
The work is attributed to Taqi al-Din Abu Muhammad Abd al-Ghani ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi, who was born in the village of Jamma'il in the region of Nablus and later settled in Damascus and Cairo . In the manuscript tradition, the collection appears as a hadith part (juz'), designated as the seventy-third part of his narrations and compiled benefits, and is also referenced under variant titles including Fawa'id al-Jama'ili and Takhrij Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi .
Contents and Transmitters
The compilation consists of prophetic traditions recorded with complete chains of transmission (isnad) going back from the author to the Prophet ﷺ . Among the primary teachers from whom al-Maqdisi relates these narrations are:
- Abu Tahir al-Silafi (Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Silafi al-Isbahani) .
- Abu al-Fadl al-Mubarak ibn al-Mubarak ibn Sadaqa al-Simsar, in Baghdad .
- Abu Hashim Isa ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Hashimi .
- Abu al-Ma'ali Ahmad ibn Abd al-Ghani al-Bajisra'i and Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sakan .
- Abu Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Naqqur .
The texts cover varied topics of asceticism, virtues, supplication, ethics, and prophetic miracles . These include the tradition comparing the fleeting nature of worldly life to dipping a finger into the sea ( وَاللَّهِ مَا الدُّنْيَا فِي الآخِرَةِ إِلا مِثْلَ مَا يَجْعَلُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِصْبَعَهُ هَذِهِ فِي الْيَمِّ فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَ تَرْجِعُ ), the virtue of bringing joy to a fellow Muslim, the weeping of the palm trunk for the Prophet ﷺ, and divine forgiveness for those who show leniency to insolvent debtors .
Transmission and Preservation
Manuscript copies of the collection are held in repositories such as the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (e.g., manuscript no. 88 / 3824) and microfilm holdings in Kuwait . The text was also included and published digitally in the first edition of the Jawami' al-Kalim hadith database in 2004 CE .
