Ahadith al-Attar an Shuyukhihi (Hadiths of al-Attar from His Teachers) is a short hadith compilation (juz') assembled by the Baghdadi scholar and Quran reciter Ibn Muqsim al-Attar (265–354 AH / 878–965 CE) .
Author and Context
The author, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ya'qub ibn al-Hasan ibn Muqsim al-Attar al-Baghdadi, was born in Baghdad in 265 AH (878 CE) and died on 8 Rabi' al-Thani 354 AH (965 CE; other reports give 352 AH or 355 AH) . He was primarily known as an authority on Quranic readings (qira'at), Kufan grammar, and exegesis . Although he faced a public trial before the authorities regarding his controversial stance that any Quranic reading conforming to Arabic grammar and the Uthmanic consonant ductus was valid without an isnad, biographers such as Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi and Al-Dhahabi noted that he remained trustworthy (thiqah) in his narration of hadith .
Content and Method
The text is a traditional hadith part (juz') containing prophetic reports and narrations that Ibn Muqsim received and transmitted directly from his various teachers . Among the prominent traditionists he heard hadith from were Abu Muslim al-Kajji, Muhammad ibn Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah, Ja'far al-Firyabi, Musa ibn Ishaq al-Ansari, Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Marwazi, and Abu al-Abbas Tha'lab .
