Ahadith al-Aqida allati yuhim zahiruha al-taarud fi al-Sahihayn dirasa wa tarjih (Hadiths of Creed whose Apparent Meaning Suggests Contradiction in the Two Sahihs: A Study and Weighting) is a contemporary study in Islamic theology and Hadith reconciliation authored by Sulayman bin Muhammad al-Dubaykhi .

Origin and Composition

The work originated as a master's thesis submitted to the Department of Creed in the College of Da'wah and Usul al-Din at Umm al-Qura University in Makkah, under the supervision of Ali bin Nufay' al-Ulyani . It was defended and approved with distinction (mumtaz) along with a recommendation for publication on 26 Rabi' al-Awwal 1420 AH . The author undertook the project to resolve apparent discrepancies in narrations found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim concerning creedal topics, relying on classical works dedicated to reconciling divergent hadiths, such as Ta'wil Mukhtalif al-Hadith by Ibn Qutayba and Mushkil al-Athar by al-Tahawi .

Structure and Scope

The book is organized into an introduction, a preliminary section (tamhid), three main parts arranged according to the theological themes in the Hadith of Gabriel (Jibril), and concluding indexes :

  • Prelude: Contains six chapters covering the definitions of contradiction (ta'arud) and mukhtalif al-hadith; the major classical works in the genre; the principle that real contradiction between authentic texts does not exist except in the perception of the researcher; the methods used by scholars to address apparent contradiction; brief biographies of al-Bukhari and Muslim; and the status of the two Sahih collections in the Muslim community .
  • Part One (Belief in Allah): Divided into three chapters. The first addresses matters of tawhid al-uluhiyya (divine worship), such as contagion (al-'adwa), augury (al-tiyara), incantations (al-ruqa), cauterization (al-kayy), swearing by other than Allah, expressions suggesting partnership in lordship, and Satan's despair of being worshipped in the Arabian Peninsula . The second treats tawhid al-asma' wa-l-sifat (divine names and attributes), including the narration "Both of His hands are right", divine mercy, God's transcendence and highness alongside verses of divine companionship, and the Prophet's vision of his Lord . The third covers faith (al-iman), including accountability for pre-Islamic deeds, narrations of promise and warning (al-wa'd wa-l-wa'id), and the location of Sidrat al-Muntaha .
  • Part Two (The Last Day): Divided into two chapters. The first covers signs of the Hour, examining the figure of Ibn Sayyad and the smoke (al-dukhan) . The second addresses afterlife matters, including the deceased being tormented by the weeping of relatives and the proportion of women in Paradise .
  • Part Three (Divine Decree and Prophethood): Divided into two chapters. The first covers divine decree (al-qadar), such as the extension of lifespan through kinship ties, the fetal recording of wretchedness versus human disposition (al-fitra), the expression "evil is not attributable to You", the fate of children of polytheists, the usage of the word "if" (law), and the timing of the angel's writing of decree . The second covers prophethood, discussing the preference among prophets and the division of parts of prophethood in dreams .

Methodology

In each issue, al-Dubaykhi presents the texts from the two Sahihs that outwardly conflict, explains the nature of the apparent discrepancy, surveys the scholarly responses across four classical approaches (reconciliation [al-jam'], abrogation [al-naskh], weighting [al-tarjih], or suspension [al-tawaqquf]), and concludes with a weighted evaluation (al-tarjih) .

The author adheres to examining raised (marfu') narrations, making exceptions for three issues that involve companion-attributed (mawquf) reports—the Prophet's vision of his Lord, the location of Sidrat al-Muntaha, and the smoke—because scholars evaluated them as effectively raised in ruling (marfu' hukman) . Biographical profiles of non-Companion figures are placed in an alphabetical appendix at the end of the work to maintain focus in the primary text .

Publication

The work was published in two volumes by Maktabat Dar al-Bayan al-Haditha in Ta'if in 1422 AH / 2001 CE as part of its university theses series . It was subsequently issued by Maktabat Dar al-Minhaj in Riyadh in 1426 AH .
