Ahadith Affan ibn Muslim (The Hadiths of Affan ibn Muslim) is a specialized hadith tract (juz') compiling narrations transmitted through the early hadith scholar and traditionist Affan ibn Muslim al-Saffar (d. 219 AH / 834 CE; also recorded as after 219 AH or after 220 AH) . The text consists of elevated prophetic traditions (ahadith marfu'ah) preserving early isnad chains directly from Affan .
Transmission and Structure
The narrations of Affan ibn Muslim were handed down through multiple chains of classical hadith transmitters. One well-known transmission lineage runs from Affan through al-Hasan ibn al-Muthanna al-Anbari, to Abu Ya'qub al-Nujayrami, to Bushra al-Fatini, to Abu Yasir Thabit ibn Bundar al-Baqqal, from whom it was related by later scholars such as Abu Tahir al-Silafi as well as Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani via Abu Bakr al-Muqarrab . It was also transmitted through paths preserved by al-Tabarani from Ahmad ibn al-Qasim, as cited by Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi .
Historically, Ibn Hajar recorded three distinct parts (ajza') for the collection across varying transmissions . However, only two parts are represented in the modern printed edition .
Publication
The work was edited by Hamzah Ahmad al-Zayn and published in Cairo by Dar al-Hadith in 1424 AH / 2004 CE . It was released as part of a collective compendium of early hadith parts entitled Ahadith al-Shuyukh al-Kibar (Narrations of the Senior Scholars), which also includes the compilations of other early authorities, such as Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaj, and Yazid ibn Abi Habib .
