Adhkar al-Salawat wa ma qablaha wa ma ba'daha (Remembrances of the Prayers and What Precedes and Follows Them) is a concise compilation of prophetic supplications and invocations related to ritual prayer, authored by Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Hajjaji (completed in 1441 AH / 2020 CE) .
Composition and Purpose
The work was completed on 20 Dhu al-Qi'dah 1441 AH (July 2020 CE) by Abu al-Hamza Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Husayn ibn 'Ali al-Hajjaji . The author compiled the text to provide Muslims with an accessible reference for prophetic invocations (adhkar) connected to the performance of daily prayers, aiming to assist worshippers in emulating the Prophet Muhammad in their worship . In his methodology, al-Hajjaji kept the treatise abridged and restricted its contents strictly to narrations that hadith scholars classified as authentic (sahih) or sound (hasan) .
Structure and Contents
The book is structured into four primary thematic sections (mabahith) :
- Section One: Invocations Preceding Prayer (al-Adhkar al-waridah qabl al-salah): Covers supplications from the moment of waking up from sleep, entering and leaving the lavatory, performing ritual ablution (wudu'), dressing, leaving the home, walking to the mosque, entering it, and responding to the call to prayer (adhan) .
- Section Two: Invocations During the Five Daily Prayers (al-Adhkar al-waridah fi al-salawat al-khams): Details the transmitted formulas from the opening takbir (takbirat al-ihram) through the opening supplications (istiftah), bowing (ruku'), prostration (sujud), sitting between prostrations, the testimony of faith (tashahhud), and up to the concluding salutation (taslim) .
- Section Three: Invocations Following the Five Daily Prayers (al-Adhkar al-waridah ba'd al-salawat al-khams): Encompasses supplications uttered immediately after the final salutation until taking off one's garments at home .
- Section Four: Invocations in Other Prayers (al-Adhkar al-waridah fi baqiyyat al-salawat ghayr al-salawat al-khams): Gathers the specific supplications reported for non-obligatory and occasional prayers, including the night prayer (salat al-layl), the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah), the two Eid prayers (salat al-'idayn), the consultation prayer (salat al-istikhara), the prayer for rain (salat al-istisqa'), and the solar eclipse prayer (salat al-kusuf) .
