Adalat al-Sahaba wa Daf al-Shubuhat (The Probity of the Companions and the Refutation of Doubts; full title: ʿAdālat al-Ṣaḥābah [raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhum] fī Ḍawʾ al-Qurʾān al-Karīm wa-l-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah wa-Dafʿ al-Shubuhāt) is a contemporary theological and hadith treatise by the Egyptian scholar Dr. Imad al-Sayyid Muhammad Isma'il al-Sharbini, published in 1425 AH / 2005 CE . Written while the author was a lecturer of hadith and its sciences at the Faculty of Usul al-Din at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the work establishes the collective probity (ʿadālah) of the Prophet's Companions (Sahaba) and systemically refutes criticisms leveled against them .
Purpose and Scope
The book defends the integrity of the transmission of Islamic scripture by demonstrating the uprightness of the Companions as the primary transmitters of the Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah . Al-Sharbini addresses both classical and modern polemical objections raised against the Companions' moral and legal probity, grounding the defense in scriptural texts, scholarly consensus, and the definitions established by Sunni jurists and hadith critics .
Structure and Contents
The book is organized into an introduction, eight thematic chapters (mabāḥith), and a concluding summary of findings with thematic indices :
- Definition of the Companions: Examines the lexical and technical definitions of a Companion according to linguists and hadith scholars, including the criteria for determining companionship .
- Concept of Probity (ʿAdālah): Defines probity linguistically and technically, clarifying that the Sunni doctrine of the Companions' probity does not imply sinlessness (ʿiṣmah) or infallibility from error, but rather their general uprightness and trustworthiness in religious transmission .
- Evidences for Probity: Collects textual proofs from the Quran, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus that affirm the upright standing of the Companions .
- Refutation of General Doubts: Analyzes specific Quranic passages and hadiths frequently cited by detractors to impugn the Companions—such as historical incidents and disagreements—and provides contextual and textual counter-arguments .
- The Practice of the Companions: Demonstrates that the agreed-upon precedent and understanding of the Companions serve as an authoritative legal proof (ḥujjah sharʿiyyah) in Islamic jurisprudence .
- Vindication of Muʿāwiyah: Dedicated to defending Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan, arguing that attacks against him serve as a conduit for undermining the collective credibility of the Companions .
- Defense of Abū Hurayrah: Provides a dedicated biographical treatment and defense of the prominent narrator Abu Hurayrah, refuting claims regarding his prolific narrations, his memory, and polemical works written against him .
- Legal Rulings Regarding Detractors: Summarizes the verdicts and positions of Sunni jurists and theologians concerning individuals who insult, defame, or reject the uprightness of the Companions .
