Abyat Mukhtara Tashtamil ala Aqida, Nasaih, Mawaiz, Wasaya, Hikam, Amthal, Adab (Selected Verses Comprising Creed, Advice, Admonitions, Testaments, Wisdom, Proverbs, and Etiquette) is an anthology of didactic and moral poetry compiled and selected by the contemporary scholar Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Busiri.

Purpose and Scope

The compiler gathered these poetic selections from various sources after prolonged research and reflection. The anthology was assembled to provide readers with noble meanings, wisdom, beneficial counsel, restraining admonitions, and comprehensive insights, with the aim of reinforcing their knowledge, culture, and adherence to their religious beliefs through eloquent poetic expression.

Structure and Contents

The work is organized into two primary divisions:

  • Part One (Poetry on Creed): Dedicated to Islamic theology, reflecting the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jama'ah as derived from the Qur'an and the Sunnah. It includes poetic excerpts illustrating the affirmation of divine oneness, the attributes of God, the uncreated nature of the Qur'an, and the status of the Companions, drawing upon verses composed by figures such as Abu al-Atahiya, Mahmud al-Warraq, Abu Umar Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Qudama al-Maqdisi, al-Shafi'i, al-Hakam ibn Ma'bad al-Khuza'i, Abu Amr al-Dani, and Abd al-Qahir ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Shafi'i.
  • Part Two (Miscellaneous Poetry): Encompasses poems offering advice, moral exhortations, testaments, proverbs, and literary manners. The verses focus on encouraging the pursuit of beneficial knowledge, fostering virtuous character, and preserving time for productive endeavors, featuring poems such as Nuzhat al-albab fi al-hikam wa-al-adab by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Mufarrij al-Qurashi al-Nabulusi.
