Abaq al-Rayahin fi Sirat Dhi al-Janahayn (Arabic: عبق الرياحين في سيرة ذي الجناحين, lit. 'The Fragrance of Basil in the Biography of the Possessor of Two Wings') is a biographical study by Nayif Munir Faris dedicated to the life, virtues, and household of the Prophet's cousin and Companion, Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib .

Overview and Publication

The work was published in Kuwait by Mabarrat al-Al wa-al-Ashab in 1432 AH / 2011 CE as the fifteenth entry in its biographical series Silsilat Siyar al-Al wa-al-Ashab . The text was reviewed and revised by the foundation’s Center for Research and Studies prior to publication .

Subject Matter and Structure

The book centers on Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib, often titled Dhu al-Janahayn ("the Possessor of Two Wings") and al-Tayyar ("the Flyer") . It chronicles his early acceptance of Islam, his leadership during the migration to Abyssinia and his discourse before the Negus, his return during the expedition of Khaybar, and his military role at the Battle of Mu'tah, where he was martyred after losing both arms while bearing the Muslim standard .

In addition to his political and military roles, the author highlights Ja‘far's character and merits, notably his physical and moral resemblance to the Prophet Muhammad, his compassion toward the needy—which earned him the moniker Abu al-Masakin ("Father of the Poor")—and the mutual love between the Prophet, his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and the broader Companions . The book also details the biographies of his lineage and descendants . It includes supplementary appendices documenting the specific textual traditions and scriptural passages concerning Ja‘far in the Quran and the Hadith .

Methodology and Sources

The author constructs the narrative using classical biographical, historical, and Hadith compilations, drawing on evaluations and accounts transmitted by early authorities and historians such as al-Dhahabi . The book aims to present a curated account derived from authentic Prophetic traditions and reliable biographical and historical references (kutub al-tarikh wa-al-rijal) .
