Zahir Shawkat al-Bayati is an author and scholar of Arabic grammar, known for his reference works on Arabic syntax and parsing, including Adawat al-I'rab (Tools of Parsing) and Taysir al-I'rab (Facilitation of Parsing).
Scholarly Approach and Contributions
Al-Bayati focused his grammatical output on facilitating the study of syntax and parsing for both beginners and specialists. Noting that students often struggled to track down parsing particles scattered across disparate chapters of grammar books, he composed Adawat al-I'rab as an on-demand alphabetical reference dictionary designed for rapid consultation.
In structuring his work, al-Bayati referenced the alphabetical model established by Ibn Hisham in Mughni al-Labib, while aiming to avoid what he viewed as shortfalls in other contemporary treatments—such as overly brief explanations or an overemphasis on obsolete, rare, and anomalous forms. His methodology centered on simplifying grammatical concepts, abandoning irregular usages, minimizing speculative interpretations (taʾwīl) and underlying grammatical estimations (taqdīr), and grounding grammatical explanations in applied examples drawn from the Quran, Hadith, and classical poetry and prose.
Al-Bayati collaborated closely with his colleague Taha Hashim al-Dulaymi, who reviewed and contributed observations to both Adawat al-I'rab and his earlier work Taysir al-I'rab.
