Yusuf Abd al-Majid Fayid (also referred to as Yusuf Fayid) was a scholar of physical geography, specializing in climatology and plant geography, known for his textbook Jughrafiyat al-Munakh wa al-Nabat (The Geography of Climate and Plants) .
Scholarly Approach
In his geographic scholarship, Fayid examined the interconnected fields of climatology and natural vegetation, viewing plant life as the living terrestrial manifestation of interacting climatic elements and soil conditions . In defining the scope of climatology, he characterized it as the study of atmospheric phenomena over a sustained period of time, particularly as they relate to the Earth's surface, distinguishing it from meteorology, which examines atmospheric phenomena in themselves within atmospheric layers regardless of their direct connection to the surface .
Methodologically, Fayid emphasized spatial distribution as a foundational tenet of geography, adopting the world's continents as standard regional units to circumvent contested and artificial regional classifications . He also incorporated microclimatology and examined the impact of climate on human life as an applied dimension of physical geography . His work Jughrafiyat al-Munakh wa al-Nabat was published in Beirut in 1971 and in Cairo in 1973 .
