Yasir ibn Muhammad Fathi is a contemporary hadith scholar and researcher based in Riyadh, known for his extensive verification and critical evaluation of prophetic traditions in works such as Fadl al-Rahim al-Wadud Takhrij Sunan Abi Dawud .

Background and Methodology

He is Abu Amr Yasir ibn Muhammad Fathi Al Eid . He completed his multi-volume hadith verification on Abu Dawud al-Sijistani's Sunan, entitled Fadl al-Rahim al-Wadud Takhrij Sunan Abi Dawud ("The Grace of the Merciful, the Loving: Verification of Sunan Abi Dawud"), in Riyadh on 15 Sha'ban 1428 AH . The work was published in 1434 AH / 2013 CE by Dar Ibn al-Jawzi in Dammam . He also authored the hadith verification (takhrij) for the supplication compendium al-Dhikr wa-l-Du'a' wa-l-'Ilaj bi-l-Ruqa min al-Kitab wa-l-Sunna .

In his approach to hadith evaluation, Fathi structures his critical methodology on the following principles:

  • Relying upon the recorded judgments of classical hadith authorities to deduce hidden defects ('ilal), explaining their concise expressions when ambiguous .
  • Adhering to the consensus of classical authorities whenever they agree upon a hadith's status .
  • Reconciling differences between early critics when their assessments vary, or otherwise weighing between their opinions using classical methods of authentication and declaring defects (tas-hih and i'lal) according to corroborating evidence .
