Yahya ibn Ali al-Mubaraki is a contemporary Saudi scholar of Arabic linguistics and phonetics, known for his experimental acoustic studies on Quranic recitation.
Education and Academic Career
Yahya ibn Ali Yahya al-Mubaraki earned his doctorate in 1413 AH (1992–1993 CE) from the Faculty of Arabic Language at Umm al-Qura University, completing a dissertation titled al-Maqtaʿ al-ṣawtī al-ʿarabī bayna al-kammiyyah wa-l-muddah al-zamaniyyah ("The Arabic Syllable between Quantity and Temporal Duration: An Applied Acoustic Study"). He subsequently served as an associate professor of Arabic linguistics in the Department of Arabic Language within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah.
Scholarly Focus
Al-Mubaraki's research centers on the experimental and acoustic analysis of phonetic features in Quranic performance (tajwīd). In his study Ẓāhirat al-madd fī al-adāʾ al-qurʾānī ("The Phenomenon of Prolongation in Quranic Performance"), published in 1423 AH (2002 CE), he investigated the precise temporal duration of incidental prolongation due to pausing (al-madd al-ʿāriḍ li-l-sukūn) using laboratory acoustic instrumentation (Sona-Graph Model 5500). His empirical analysis measured recitations of Surah Hud according to the transmission of Hafs from Asim by four prominent reciters: Mahmud Khalil al-Husari, Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi, Abd al-Basit Abd al-Samad, and Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hudhayfi.
He also examined the temporal dimensions of nasalization in his study al-Kamm al-zamanī li-ṣuwayt al-ghunnah fī al-adāʾ al-qurʾānī ("The Temporal Quantity of the Sound of Nasalization in Quranic Performance"), analyzing the duration of ghunnah across various phonetic environments in the rules of unvoweled nūn and mīm.
